Donald Trump marked his 80th birthday on Sunday with a politically charged day that included renewed headlines over Iran peace talks and a White House UFC spectacle planned for later in the evening.
Trump’s birthday fell on June 14, 2026, the same day the White House was preparing to host “UFC Freedom 250” on the South Lawn as part of America’s 250th anniversary celebrations. The event, which was expected to draw thousands of guests and tens of thousands more watching from outside the grounds, also faced a severe weather threat from thunderstorms and lightning.
At the center of the day’s political drama was the latest development in the Iran war. After months of escalating strikes, ceasefire scares and tense back-channel diplomacy, reports on Sunday indicated that the United States and Iran had reached a tentative deal framework aimed at ending the conflict, reopening the Strait of Hormuz and extending the ceasefire, though final details still appeared to be in flux.
Although the agreement had not yet been formally signed, Trump struck a triumphant tone online and portrayed the breakthrough as a major regional victory.

Posting on Truth Social, Trump declared the deal complete and confirmed that shipping through the Strait of Hormuz would resume, along with an end to the US naval blockade.
“The Deal with the Islamic Republic of Iran is now complete. Congratulations to all! I hereby fully authorize the toll free opening of the Strait of Hormuz, and, simultaneously herewith, authorize the immediate removal of the United States Naval blockade. Ships of the World, start your engines. Let the oil flow!”
In a follow-up message, he described the agreement as a significant regional achievement and claimed previous administrations had been unable to deliver a similar outcome.
“This Great Deal will bring Peace and Security to the whole Region. Many presidents have tried to make Peace with Iran, and all have failed before me. The Leaders of the Region have, for the first time, found a President who can help them achieve real Peace. With the opening of the Strait upon the signing of the Deal on Friday, for purposes of mine removal, oil will flow on both ends again for the Region, and the World!”
The announcement also came only a few days after Trump publicly said his birthday wish extended beyond the Middle East and focused on ending conflict more broadly.
Asked on June 10 what he hoped for on his birthday aside from peace in the Middle East, Trump replied:
“Well, I’ll go a step bigger…peace for the world, OK?”
“Peace for the world. Middle East? Yes. Peace for the whole world.”

The news broke hours before the White House UFC celebration was due to begin in honour of the president’s 80th birthday and America’s semiquincentennial.
The event had originally been scheduled for 8pm local time and was expected to draw more than 4,000 people on site, with upwards of 100,000 more attending a nearby Fan Fest. However, organisers later pushed the start time back to 9pm because of worsening weather forecasts.
Conditions were expected to be severe, with forecasters warning of ping-pong-ball-sized hail, frequent lightning and winds reaching 70mph. That led to speculation that the event could be delayed further or even scrapped entirely if officials were forced to issue a shelter-in-place order.
Even so, the White House maintained that the celebration would still go ahead rain or shine, insisting the occasion would be marked despite the threat of extreme weather.
