MrBeast Reveals Why He Always Asks for Receipts After Massive Costly Mistake

MrBeast has explained why he now makes a point of asking for a receipt every time he eats at a restaurant.

Jimmy Donaldson, better known online as MrBeast, built his career on large-scale YouTube videos that regularly involve massive giveaways and high-stakes challenges.

That approach has helped him grow into the platform’s most-subscribed creator, with 500 million subscribers as of June 2026.

With that level of reach comes intense public attention, and Donaldson has said even small everyday situations can quickly turn into major online discussion.

He recalled learning that the hard way after a restaurant visit where another person covered the cost of his meal.

The issue, he said, was that he left without asking for the receipt.

“One of the first times someone paid for my meal, I didn’t get a receipt,” he explained in an appearance on the Lewis Howes podcast, “I asked the waiter, ‘So I’m good to go?’ They said yeah.”

Because of that, he said he never realized there was still a tip to leave.

“Then the next day it’s on the front page of Reddit with the headline MrBeast didn’t tip,” he said. “But they conveniently leave out that someone else paid the bill.”

He added: “It’s like, one of the largest philanthropists in the world can’t afford to tip? I didn’t even get the bill.

“I don’t carry cash, how do you want me to tip? Do you want me to wave my hand and spawn some money?”

After that experience, Donaldson said he changed his routine and now insists on seeing the receipt before leaving, regardless of who covered the meal.

“So now if someone pays for my meal, I won’t leave until someone gives me a receipt so I can leave a tip,” he said.

He added: “There’s no-one teaching you these things that happen when you’re famous, you just kind of have to learn it all.”

Donaldson has also previously shared his so-called ‘Purple Cow’ theory when discussing what helps videos stand out online.

“There’s this analogy I like to use if you’re driving down the road and you see a cow, you’ wont look,” he said. “But if there’s a purple cow, you’re going to look four times.”
