Gunfire erupted at a family cookout in Brooklyn’s Coney Island on Saturday night, leaving eight people wounded, including four children, and sending shockwaves through a neighborhood already haunted by recent gang violence.
The shooting occurred around 10:35 p.m. on July 4 in the courtyard of an apartment building on West 31st Street, about a block from the iconic Coney Island boardwalk. The timing was particularly unsettling—the shots rang out against the backdrop of fireworks booming across the city as revelers celebrated the nation’s 250th anniversary.

Authorities said an unidentified man dressed entirely in black and wearing a black ski mask approached the fence line along Surf Avenue and opened fire without warning into the courtyard where a family had gathered for a holiday barbecue. The gunman then fled on foot, disappearing into the night as residents called emergency services.
Police responded quickly, finding eight victims suffering from gunshot wounds. Four children—ages 6, 7, 12, and 14—were among those shot. One victim, a 21-year-old woman struck in the chest, was hospitalized in critical condition. The youngest child, a 6-year-old boy, was shot in the stomach. A 7-year-old boy sustained gunshot wounds to both legs, while a 12-year-old was shot in the leg and a 14-year-old was hit in the thigh.
The adult victims included a 25-year-old woman shot in the leg, a 33-year-old man shot in the chest, and a 37-year-old man shot in the shoulder. All seven other victims besides the critically injured 21-year-old woman were listed in stable condition and expected to survive. Mayor Zohran Mamdani confirmed that all four children were expected to recover.

NYPD Commissioner Jessica Tisch, addressing reporters at a Sunday morning news conference, stressed that authorities had found no indication of any argument or altercation preceding the violence. “The preliminary investigation indicates that a family barbecue was taking place in the courtyard when an unknown male dressed in all black and wearing a black ski mask approached the fence line along Surf Avenue and fired multiple rounds into the courtyard,” Tisch said.
Police recovered a TEC-9-style firearm with an extended magazine at the scene, along with 10 discharged shell casings. Despite the recovered weapon, no arrests have been made as of Sunday. Detectives are combing the area for surveillance footage and interviewing witnesses in hopes of identifying and apprehending the suspect.
One particularly alarming angle of the investigation involves a possible connection to organized crime. Tisch revealed that a confirmed gang-related homicide had occurred on the same block earlier in the week. Authorities are actively investigating whether the July 4 shooting represents a retaliatory strike linked to that previous killing, though the victims at the barbecue appear to have been innocent civilians caught in the crossfire of potential gang violence.
Coney Island has been grappling with gang-related violence in recent years. In May, prosecutors announced charges against 15 alleged members of gang subsets based in the neighborhood, accusing them of involvement in 16 shootings over 13 months. Commissioner Tisch emphasized that there is no active, ongoing threat to the general public and characterized the shooting as a localized incident.
The incident left residents shaken and angry. Nsowaa Stewart, a Coney Island resident, told reporters she was “outraged” by what happened, particularly the shooting of young children. “This is an emergency, and this has to be addressed,” she said. “If you go by there, you see bikes, you see children’s toys. It’s horrible to walk by there. This can’t happen again.”
Mayor Mamdani expressed the city’s resolve during the news briefing, stating: “There is no place for this kind of violence in our city. We will not tolerate it, and we will fight it with every single tool at our disposal.”
The NYPD is urging anyone with information about the masked shooter to contact the Crime Stoppers Hotline at 1-800-577-TIPS. All calls remain strictly confidential as the investigation continues into one of the ugliest chapters of the city’s Fourth of July celebrations.
