After spending a decade in the Spider-Man franchise and starring in four films, Tom Holland is looking back on his journey as Peter Parker and considering when the time might come to hand the role to someone else.
Holland became a global star through his work in the Marvel Cinematic Universe’s Spider-Man movies, beginning the role when he was only 18. He had previously explained that his six-film agreement ended with Spider-Man: No Way Home, leaving his future as the character uncertain at the time. A fourth solo outing, Spider-Man: Brand New Day, is now on the way and is currently scheduled for release on July 31, 2026.
“If I’m playing Spider-Man after I’m 30, I’ve done something wrong,” he told GQ prior to the release of the third instalment.
Now, several years later, that outlook has shifted. Holland was 27 when he made that remark, and after turning 30 last summer, he appears to see things differently.

While speaking to GQ ahead of The Odyssey, Holland revisited the old comment and admitted it hit differently in hindsight.
“It’s funny, I saw that quote pop up somewhere recently and I kind of reeled, because I was trying to remember what I meant,” he said.
He also discussed the same line with Esquire, calling it a misguided remark.
“I don’t even really know what that means,”
Holland then explained what he believes he had been trying to say at the time.
“I think the point of it is that I would love to pass the baton on, and I haven’t achieved that yet,” he added in his chat with GQ.
Even so, he said the subject is something that comes up often behind the scenes, and suggested his original age cutoff may no longer apply. According to the outlet, he joked that he may have to move that number up to 37.
He went on to describe playing Spider-Man as ‘the joy of his life,’ adding that he now feels ready to continue in the role for ‘as long as they’ll have him’.
Beyond career success, the Spider-Man films also changed Holland’s personal life. Through the franchise, he met Zendaya, who he has suggested is now his wife.

The pair first crossed paths in 2016 during the chemistry read and casting process for 2017’s Spider-Man: Homecoming.
After building a close friendship, they eventually made their relationship public in 2021.
Earlier this year, speculation spread online that the two had quietly married, though neither of them addressed it publicly for some time.
That changed during an interview with Esquire last month, when Holland shared that AI-generated Lake Como wedding pictures had even made their way to his grandmother, who apparently believed her invitation had been lost in the mail.
Asked whether he had to send similar clarifications to more relatives, he responded: “No, because they were all there.”
He did not offer anything beyond that, though.
“That’s all you’ll get on that.”
Spider-Man: Brand New Day releases in theatres on July 31.
