Las Vegas police have issued a stark warning to inexperienced climbers after dramatic footage captured a free-solo rescue on Lone Mountain.
The rescue unfolded Monday evening on the southern face of the 560-foot peak in northwest Las Vegas, where an unidentified climber had become stranded without ropes, harnesses or any safety equipment. Temperatures in the city had reached a sweltering 106 degrees that day, according to Accuweather, compounding the danger for the stranded individual.
Video released by authorities shows a Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department officer rappelling down the rock face to reach the unsecured and visibly frightened climber. The rescuer carefully climbed up to the person’s position, secured them to his own gear, and then signaled for a helicopter to perform what police described as a “double-up Lezard hoist” to extract both of them simultaneously.
“Outdoor climbing requires skills, preparation and risk assessment that are very different from climbing in a controlled indoor environment,” police wrote on X in a post after the rescue. “If you are inexperienced outdoors, seek instruction from a qualified guide or experienced mentor, stay on appropriate routes, carry the proper equipment, and don’t attempt terrain beyond your training or ability.”
Police said the climber had some indoor climbing experience but was completely unprepared for the technical demands of scaling an actual mountain. Las Vegas officials confirmed to The California Post that the individual “did not have any equipment” as they climbed the mountain. The person was not injured during the incident.
“Most experienced climbers understand these risks and take extensive steps to prepare before heading out,” police continued on X. “Unfortunately, our Search and Rescue team occasionally encounters situations where people venture into technical terrain without the experience or equipment necessary to safely get themselves back down.”
Both the rescuer and the climber were flown to an improvised landing zone and safely transferred to other first responders waiting on the ground. The operation concluded without injuries, though authorities emphasized it could have ended tragically.
