Matthew McConaughey revealed that name-dropping Jennifer Lopez during a police stop at the U.S.-Mexico border got him out of what he called a “major mess.”
The 56-year-old Oscar winner shared the story Thursday on Josh Horowitz’s “Happy Sad Confused” podcast while discussing his romantic comedy career. McConaughey, who was promoting his upcoming crime thriller “The Rivals of Amziah King,” told listeners he was crossing into Mexico late at night when officers pulled him over in a remote area. “I’m crossing the border, going way down south, and I get pulled over,” he recalled. “It’s one of those pullovers where they noticed me.”

McConaughey described himself as a “gringo in a… Nice truck” and immediately sensed trouble. “This is that dress down, and I’m like, aw, jeez, get the wallet out. Here we go,” he said on the podcast. As the interaction escalated, the “Dallas Buyers Club” star pivoted to a different strategy entirely. “And then I brought up, ‘You guys know Jennifer Lopez?'” he remembered. “And I was like, ‘Ever see Wedding Planner?’ And I was like, ‘Yeah, yeah, it was me.'”
The officers recognized the connection instantly. “They were like, ‘Ohhh,'” McConaughey said, imitating their reaction. What began as a tense traffic stop transformed into an impromptu fan encounter. “We end up taking pictures together, and they let me go,” he concluded. McConaughey did not specify exactly when the incident occurred, though his and Lopez’s film came out in January 2001.

The “Wedding Planner” reunion has remained a touchstone for both actors over the decades. Lopez, 57, and McConaughey connected via Instagram Live in 2021 to mark the film’s 20th anniversary, with Lopez gushing about their time together. “I so enjoyed working with you,” she told her former co-star during the livestream. “We had such a nice rapport and chemistry. We were somewhat at the beginning of our careers at that time. It was exciting to be working on any movie. I still feel that way. It was a magical time.”
McConaughey returned the praise in a 2024 interview with People, highlighting Lopez’s legendary work ethic. “I’ve never seen someone be able to choreograph something so cleanly and clearly and actually hit the coordination of that scene,” he said, calling her “a worker,” He added, “She knows what she wants to do, and she does what she needs to do to pull off what she wants to do.”
Elsewhere in Thursday’s podcast episode, McConaughey reflected on another early-aughts rom-com that has proven remarkably lucrative. He called “How to Lose a Guy in 10 Days,” his 2003 pairing with Kate Hudson, “the gift that keeps on giving” and noted it has earned him the most residuals of any movie “by far.” He explained that the film’s Valentine’s Day association meant he used to receive a substantial check every March when DVD and cable revenue peaked.
In the viral moment that spawned McConaughey’s Mexico story, a routine border crossing turned into a celebrity flex that only Hollywood could produce. The actor’s quick thinking transformed potential legal trouble into a photo opportunity, with officers apparently more interested in his movie star credentials than any supposed infraction. The episode underscores how deeply “The Wedding Planner” penetrated popular culture — particularly in Latin America, where Lopez’s star power has remained immense for over two decades.
McConaughey’s new film, “The Rivals of Amziah King,” opens in select theaters Friday with a wider release set for later in August.
