Shirley MacLaine, 92, sends her love to ‘Sweet Charity’ fans in rare video

The actress recorded a brief greeting for the Southampton Playhouse on Long Island, where the Bob Fosse-directed classic will screen on Aug. 25 at 7 p.m. ET. “Hi, Southampton Playhouse. Wish I could be with you,” MacLaine said in the clip posted on Instagram. “I would like to see ‘Sweet Charity’ again. Now, while you’re watching it, remember how hard we worked,” she added, reflecting on the demanding production.

“And between you and me, it didn’t do very well, so I hope you guys like it,” MacLaine quipped with characteristic self-deprecation. The Oscar winner signed off by saying, “Much love,” and blowing a kiss to her fans.

Social media users flooded the comments with enthusiasm at seeing the Hollywood legend. “Oh my goodness! A message from a living legend! ❤️,” wrote one user. “Bravo to Shirley MacLaine!! One of the last of the great stars from the 1950’s. I have loved her many great films and characters ❤️,” added another. “Shirley!!!!!! ❤️🙌 looking amazing darling!” Commented a third.

The video marks a notably public moment for MacLaine, who has maintained a low profile in recent years. She was last photographed in April, days before her 92nd birthday, while leaving lunch in Malibu, California, where she was seen holding a companion’s arm as she exited the restaurant. In March, she was spotted enjoying oysters and a beer in the same coastal city.

MacLaine has long credited her background in dance for her physical resilience and longevity. “I started my dance training at age 3 and stopped at about 67,” she said in April 2024. “It taught me discipline, loving music, working with people and dealing with pain.”

In the viral moment that sparked this latest wave of fan affection, MacLaine starred in “Sweet Charity” as Charity Hope Valentine, a taxi dancer at a Times Square dance hall searching for love despite repeated disappointments. The film, adapted from the Broadway musical that had itself been based on Federico Fellini’s “Nights of Cabiria,” represented a major gamble for Universal Pictures at the time. Though it earned mixed reviews from critics upon release, the production secured three Academy Award nominations: Best Art Direction, Best Costume Design, and Best Score of a Musical Picture. MacLaine’s performance earned her a Golden Globe nomination for Best Actress in a Musical or Comedy and a Laurel Award for top female comedy performance.

The Southampton Playhouse screening offers audiences a rare chance to see the Technicolor musical on the big screen, with MacLaine’s personal endorsement lending the event additional significance for film historians and longtime admirers of her work.

The “Sweet Charity” screening at the Southampton Playhouse is scheduled for Aug. 25 at 7 p.m. ET.
