Charlie Hunnam and the original Sons of Anarchy cast confirm spinoff return with a wild twist

Charlie Hunnam is reuniting with his Sons of Anarchy co-stars for a meta twist on the beloved FX drama.

The 44-year-old actor, who played Jax Teller across all seven seasons from 2008 to 2014, has developed a new limited series called Legends alongside Jonathan Groff. Rather than reviving their iconic characters, Hunnam and the returning cast will portray fictionalized versions of themselves in what FX describes as a “meta thriller.”

The official logline reads: “When the cast of Sons of Anarchy reunites at a fan convention after more than a decade, the line between life and art blurs as the fractured brotherhood finds itself up against a real-world threat more dangerous than anything they ever faced in their show.”

Hunnam is executive producing with Groff, Rob Mac, Nicholas Frenkel and Jackie Cohn. The project marks a significant pivot from his previous statements about the franchise. In a 2020 interview with People, Hunnam had declared he would “never, ever put that cut back on” and that Jax was definitively dead. “When he died, he died,” he said then.

Katey Sagal, Ron Perlman, Maggie Siff, Mark Boone Junior, Tommy Flanagan, Kim Coates and Theo Rossi are all set to return. Sagal, 71, originally played Gemma Teller Morrow and is married to series creator Kurt Sutter, who notably is not involved with Legends.

Sutter addressed his absence directly in an Instagram video posted after the announcement. “I’m not involved with Legends at all, nor should I be,” he stated. “It has nothing to do with the characters I created or the mythology. It is really about the show and the legacy of the show, and quite frankly, there are thousands of people who are responsible for that legacy.”

Sutter did reveal that Hunnam approached him early in development. “I gave Charlie my full blessing,” he said. “I wish nothing but the best for him in this project. My wife is in the project.”

The concept drew immediate comparisons online to the 1999 sci-fi comedy Galaxy Quest, where fictional actors faced real alien danger. On X, one user observed: “So the series Legends is basically Sons of Anarchy meets Galaxy Quest in a way.”

Fan reactions to the August 19 announcement were decidedly mixed across platforms. “I think this idea lowkey sucks… but it is way better than ruining the perfect ending. So at least they got it right,” one viewer wrote. Another posted: “Honestly they could do this with so many shows. It’s weird but I’m onboard.” Some expressed simple confusion, with one user writing: “…What?”

The self-referential format solves a narrative problem that had long dogged potential revivals. In the viral moment that capped the original series, Jax Teller died in a deliberate motorcycle collision with an oncoming truck, a definitive end that made traditional resurrection impossible. Multiple characters met violent deaths across the show’s run, making any conventional continuation difficult without undermining the established finale.

Hunnam himself had teased the possibility of some form of return as recently as October 2022, telling the Associated Press: “You never know. What I know is that group of actors remain my dear friends. There is an energy still circulating that project that is enticing. Hopefully more to come.” At that time, he acknowledged being in “the infancy of exploring the viability of the idea.”

The Galaxy Quest comparison resonated because both properties center on actors whose fictional personas become tangled with extraordinary circumstances. Where the 1999 film played its premise for comedy, however, FX is positioning Legends as a thriller, suggesting a darker tone more aligned with the original series’ violent mythology.

Additional cast members beyond the announced seven are expected to be revealed as production progresses.
