Melania Trump broke her month-long public silence with a pointed five-word greeting to the crowd at the White House Rose Garden on Thursday.
The first lady, 55, had not been seen in public since the FIFA World Cup final on July 19, a stretch of more than five weeks that included her absence from several high-profile events where President Donald Trump, 79, appeared solo. She missed a ceremony for four US service members killed in the Middle East, the White House Correspondents’ Dinner, and Senator Lindsey Graham’s funeral, according to an analysis by The Daily Beast that tracked her public appearances to just 38 days this year before Thursday.
“Good afternoon. I heard you missed me,” she told attendees at the lectern. “Here I am.”
Trump walked with her to the lectern and patted her on the back as she began her remarks, marking their first joint public appearance since the World Cup final in New Jersey. The event centered on her “Fostering the Future” initiative, one of the main programs attached to her office during her husband’s second term.
Behind the scenes during her absence, her office continued promoting the initiative. On July 30, her office announced she had helped reunite five Ukrainian and Russian children with families displaced by the ongoing war. “While diplomacy and peacebuilding are important to this effort, they are surpassed by our collective ability to place children above international disputes,” she said in a White House statement at the time. “Every reunion is a reminder that compassion, dignity, and family can transcend even the darkest of times: war.”
Thursday’s appearance focused on expanding opportunities for young people leaving the foster care system. Melania announced a new scholarship program backed by a $2 million donation from IndyCar and Fox Corporation. The money will support scholarships at Indiana University and Purdue University, and the partnership brings the initiative’s network to 26 colleges and universities.
“America’s greatest competitive advantage remains in its own people,” she said in prepared remarks at the event.
“Tomorrow’s leaders are sitting in classrooms today, including those growing up in foster care. Their capability is no less remarkable.”
The first lady’s low profile during Trump’s second term has fueled ongoing speculation about her role and her relationship with the president. Earlier this year, she addressed allegations surrounding Jeffrey Epstein in a five-minute statement from the White House on April 9, denying any connection to the disgraced financier. “The lies linking me with the disgraceful Jeffrey Epstein need to end today,” she said in the statement. “The false smears about me from mean-spirited and politically motivated individuals and entities looking to cause damage to my good name to gain financially and climb politically must stop.”
She has increasingly associated her work with technology and education, taking part in events surrounding the Presidential AI Challenge earlier this year. In September 2025, she told a White House Task Force on Artificial Intelligence Education meeting that “our future is no longer science fiction” and that “it is our duty to treat AI as we would our own children — empowering, but with watchful guidance.”

The IndyCar and Fox Corporation donation announced Thursday represents one of the largest single contributions to her initiative to date. IndyCar officials attended the Rose Garden event, which came ahead of the Freedom 250 Grand Prix scheduled for Saturday and Sunday in Washington, D.C.
