She continued by naming his signature projects directly. “Many knew and loved him through The Five Heartbeats, The Wanderers, V, The Principal, Streamers, and the many other characters he brought to life throughout his remarkable career,” she added. The statement emphasized that his personal significance to family and friends exceeded his public fame, noting that “to those of us who loved him personally, he was so much more than the roles the world knew him for.”

The family asked for privacy during their mourning period. “Our family is grieving an enormous and deeply personal loss,” Susan Wright shared. She requested that the public, media members, and admirers “please allow our family the privacy and grace to grieve during this incredibly difficult time.” The statement also specifically asked people to “refrain from sharing unconfirmed information or speaking on behalf of our family.”

She indicated that additional details about memorial plans would come later. “In the coming days, when we are ready, we will share additional information regarding Michael’s life, legacy, and how we intend to honor and celebrate him,” she noted.

Susan Wright closed her tribute with a direct farewell to her husband. “Michael, your work will live forever, but your love will live even longer in the hearts of those who knew you best,” she concluded. “Rest peacefully, my love. You will be missed beyond words.”

The actor’s death drew tributes from colleagues across the entertainment industry. Leon Robinson, who co-starred with Wright in ‘The Five Heartbeats,’ shared an Instagram story reading “Rest in Peace Michael Wright.” Fellow actor David Allen Walker posted on Facebook, “REST IN PEACE MICHAEL WRIGHT AKA EDDIE KANE. #FIVEHEARTBEATS. You were one of the Greats!.” Actress Kimberly Medina Courts also shared a tribute, writing “Well said…… Rest well sir Michael Wright job well done! Heartbeats forever.”

American comedian Loni Love shared news of the death on social media, writing “The underrated actor Michael Wright has passed.”

In the viral moment that defined his career, Wright played Eddie King Jr. In the 1991 musical drama ‘The Five Heartbeats,’ portraying a talented but troubled singer in a fictional R&B vocal group navigating fame and personal demons. The film, directed by Robert Townsend, became a cult classic and Wright’s performance as the volatile Eddie remained his most widely recognized role. He had broken through earlier with his 1979 role as Clinton in ‘The Wanderers,’ and built an extensive resume including Robert Altman’s ‘Streamers’ (1983), ‘The Principal’ (1987) opposite Jim Belushi, and the 1994 crime drama ‘Sugar Hill’ with Wesley Snipes. His television work included playing Elias Taylor in the 1980s sci-fi franchise ‘V’ and inmate Omar White on HBO’s ‘Oz,’ plus appearances on ‘Miami Vice,’ ‘New York Undercover,’ and ‘Black Lightning.’

Wright is survived by his wife, daughter, and stepchildren.
