McDonald’s is dropping a hugely popular coffee flavor after a decade on the menu

McDonald’s is retiring pumpkin spice from its fall coffee lineup for the first time in ten years.

The fast-food chain confirmed to The Post that the seasonal staple, introduced back in 2016, will not return this autumn. Instead, customers will find a Caramel Apple Pie flavor across the menu starting this month, a spokesperson said.

“While Pumpkin Spice will not be part of this year’s lineup, we’re always exploring new ways to give fans seasonal flavors to enjoy. We chose Caramel Apple Pie because it offers a fresh take on the familiar tastes of fall — and one we think fans will fall in love with,” the spokesperson told The Post.

The new drink pairs apple and caramel flavoring with McDonald’s coffee, then tops it with salted caramel whipped cream and crumbled apple pie bits.

The swap arrives as pumpkin fatigue appears to be setting in among some consumers. While Dunkin’, Starbucks, bagel shops and grocery stores still push spice-forward fall menus earlier each year — now often debuting in August — a growing contingent of drinkers has been begging for alternatives.

Starbucks pioneered the pumpkin spice craze in 2003 with its Pumpkin Spice Latte, and the Seattle-based chain has since spun the flavor into pastries, cold foams and other variations. McDonald’s entered the game thirteen years later, adding its own pumpkin spice to seasonal coffee offerings as the flavor saturated nearly everywhere.

Reactions online split immediately. On X, one user fired back at the change with stacked punctuation and all-caps fury: “What a BAD replacement-!!!!!!!!!! NO Substitutions ARE NEEDED; NOR, ARE DESIRED-!!!!!!!!!!!!!!”

Another customer took to Facebook and framed the loss as part of a larger pattern of 2026 disappointments. “So I just found out McDonald’s isn’t doing their Pumpkin coffees anymore??? 2026 has officially gone too far. First we lose everything we love and now they’re taking away my pumpkin coffee?!?! I have never been more betrayed by a fast food restaurant in my LIFE.”

Defenders of the move quickly surfaced to praise McDonald’s for bucking the autumn orthodoxy. “Unpopular opinion: I absolutely HATE pumpkin spice anything. So when I saw McDonald’s came out with a Caramel Apple Pie line, I was like okay, THIS I can get behind!” one supporter wrote.

A convert who had already sampled the replacement shared enthusiasm on social media: “I got the frappe today and OH. MY. GOODNESS. It literally tastes just like those caramel apple suckers I get every fall! As someone who refuses to participate in the pumpkin spice obsession every year… THIS is it.”

The caramel apple concept draws on a classic American confection rather than the now-ubiquitous spice blend, potentially giving McDonald’s a point of differentiation as the seasonal arms race among chains intensifies. Whether the gamble pays off will depend on whether the pumpkin-loyal crowd returns or stays away through the fall months.

McDonald’s has not announced whether pumpkin spice might return in future years.
