A rifle-wielding man who allegedly fired more than 200 rounds during a neighborhood standoff is being held without bail after a SWAT team pinned his getaway tractor with an armored vehicle.
Erik Gordon Shunn, 53, was arraigned Monday in Clackamas County Circuit Court on nine criminal counts including attempted murder, attempted assault, weapons offenses, and interfering with a peace officer following his arrest Saturday in Clackamas County, Oregon. The Clackamas County Sheriff’s Office said the confrontation began with a 911 call and ended roughly an hour later when tactical operators moved in.
Investigators now believe Shunn fired over 200 rounds during the standoff, according to the Sheriff’s Office. The volley of shots targeted both arborists working in the area and a police surveillance drone deployed overhead to locate him.
Wild footage released by authorities showed Shunn lying on his back and firing upward toward the drone as it hovered above him. SWAT units had swooped in and established the aerial surveillance shortly after the initial emergency call came in.
Shunn eventually set his rifle down and attempted to flee on a red compact tractor, the Sheriff’s Office said. SWAT personnel quickly seized that moment to intervene.
“SWAT personnel used this window of opportunity because they believed it provided the highest likelihood of safely apprehending Shunn,” the Sheriff’s Office said in a statement.
The armored vehicle slammed into the tractor, pinning it and ending the escape attempt. Deputies then moved in and took Shunn into custody without further gunfire.
First responders immediately checked on neighbors and workers to evacuate them safely from the area. No injuries were reported among law enforcement, civilians, or the suspect himself despite the heavy volume of gunfire.
