Emma Heming Willis says her family lives in a “constant state of grief” as they care for Bruce Willis through his frontotemporal dementia.
Emma, 50, opened up to Hello! Magazine in an interview published Monday about the painful reality of watching the 71-year-old action star’s gradual decline. “It is extremely difficult and painful,” she told the magazine.
The mother of two explained the slow erosion the disease causes. “It’s natural — we all want our loved ones to be healthy, full of life and [be] the person they always were. But FTD is a devastating illness that steals things from you very slowly.”
Bruce was diagnosed with frontotemporal dementia in February 2023, roughly a year after his family announced he was stepping away from acting due to an initial aphasia diagnosis. The progressive brain disease differs markedly from Alzheimer’s, a distinction Emma said she constantly finds herself clarifying.
She pointed to what she called an “immense lack of information” about dementia among the general public. The question she hears most often — whether Bruce still recognizes her — struck her as particularly revealing.
“My answer is always a resounding yes. Bruce doesn’t have Alzheimer’s. He has frontotemporal dementia, which affects a completely different part of the brain,” she added.
Emma directed her frustration toward media coverage of the disease, calling for a fundamental shift in how journalists report on it. “I wish they’d inform themselves about the different types of dementia and learn to report on them accurately, educating the public rather than feeding fear and stigma,” she said.
Despite the challenges, Emma emphasized how Bruce’s five daughters have remained present in his life. “Each of them has built her own unique bond with him,” she shared. “It’s incredible because all five are completely different, but they share the same foundation: Bruce was always an incredibly solid, steadfast presence in their lives.”
Bruce shares Mabel, 14, and Evelyn, 12, with Emma, whom he married in 2009. He also has Rumer, 38, Scout, 35, and Tallulah, 32, with ex-wife Demi Moore.
The family’s closeness was visible in August when Bruce attended Tallulah’s wedding to Justin Acee. Vogue published a black-and-white photograph showing Bruce with his arm around Tallulah while holding Acee’s hand, his daughter leaning into his shoulder.
Tallulah posted the image herself with a caption that read, “A tender moment with my dad, Bruce Willis, and Justin at the start of the wedding weekend.”
Emma has increasingly used her platform to raise awareness about FTD since Bruce’s diagnosis, speaking candidly about both the emotional toll and the need for better public understanding of the disease’s specific manifestations.
The former model’s advocacy comes as the family continues adjusting to life with Bruce’s condition, which primarily affects personality, behavior and language rather than memory in its early stages — a nuance she has repeatedly sought to explain.
Bruce’s retirement from acting was first announced in March 2022 when his family revealed his aphasia diagnosis, a language disorder affecting communication. The progression to frontotemporal dementia was confirmed the following year, bringing an end to a four-decade career that included iconic roles in Die Hard, Pulp Fiction and The Sixth Sense.
