Netflix has pulled the plug on “Ransom Canyon” after two seasons.
The Western romantic drama starring Josh Duhamel, 53, and Minka Kelly, 46, will not return for a third season, according to a report from Deadline. The outlet cited low viewership as the driving factor behind the decision. Season 2 drew 4.1 million viewers in its first week, a 43 percent drop from the 7.2 million who tuned in for Season 1’s debut.
The cancellation arrives less than two months after Season 2 premiered on July 23. The first season debuted in April 2025. Season 2 also ran shorter than its predecessor, with eight episodes compared to Season 1’s ten.
Created by April Blair, the series was adapted from romance novels by Jodi Thomas. Set in Texas, it followed three ranching families battling for control of their land, legacies, and relationships. Duhamel played Staten Kirkland, a ranch owner, while Kelly portrayed Quinn O’Grady, a concert pianist and lavender farmer who becomes Staten’s love interest.
Before the cancellation, Blair had mapped out ambitious plans for where the story would go next. She said that the Season 2 finale, which saw Quinn reject her British boyfriend’s marriage proposal to be with Staten, was only setting the stage for deeper storytelling.
“I always say the end of season 2 isn’t the end of their story. It’s actually just the beginning,” she said. “Falling in love and deciding to be together is the easy part. What happens after that? How do you keep that love alive?”
Blair added that the central couple would face new tests as a unit rather than apart. “So it took two seasons for them to end up together, but they still have a lot of hurdles and fun to come, but they’ll be facing them together instead of separate.”
The showrunner had also teased a larger role for one of Season 2’s more enigmatic figures. Blair told EW that Heidi Grace Engerman’s character, the mysterious Sidney, “definitely has a presence in season three.”
Duhamel and Kelly had publicly shared their own visions for Staten and Quinn’s future before learning the show had been axed. Speaking to Decider in July, Kelly expressed enthusiasm about moving past the will-they-won’t-they dynamic that had defined the relationship.
“I’m excited at the potential of getting to explore what it really is like to start a life with someone,” she said. “I mean, our whole lives it’s been start, stop, will-they-won’t-they, yes, no, can’t.”
She continued, “So what’s it like when you’re building a home together, when you’re building a life together? When you’re finally cohabitating, what does that really look like?”
Duhamel echoed his co-star’s interest in domestic storylines and went a step further with his own pitch. “I’d love to be able to see how these two handle domestic day-to-day. And I think that we should have a baby!” he said.
The ensemble cast also included Lizzy Greene, Garrett Wareing, Marianly Tejada, Jack Schumacher, Andrew Liner, Philip Winchester, Brett Cullen, and Kate Burton. James Brolin appeared in Season 1 as Cap Fuller, dying from a heart attack in the finale.
The outlet has reached out to representatives for Netflix, Duhamel, and Kelly for comment on the cancellation.
