Amy Steadman, 64, and her daughter Sarah Myers, 44, both died from “fatal or lethal levels” of diphenhydramine in a June murder-suicide that also claimed four young children in Mechanicville, New York, according to toxicology results released by local police.
Chief Bill Rabbitt of the Mechanicville Police Department disclosed the findings Friday, confirming the antihistamine was the substance used by both women to end their own lives. The same drug was administered to Myers’ four children in lethal amounts, turning a family home into the scene of one of Upstate New York’s most disturbing tragedies.
The victims were identified as Harper, 13; Hudson, 11; and 10-year-old twins Gracelynn and Gavin Harmon. All four siblings were found dead alongside their mother and grandmother, though authorities have not specified exactly when the poisonings occurred.
Beyond the allergy medication, toxicology screens revealed another substance in the children’s systems. Mitragynine, a compound derived from kratom, was detected in all four youngsters, police confirmed. Kratom is a plant-based substance that has gained attention in recent years for its psychoactive properties and remains unregulated in many jurisdictions.
The combination of substances suggests a calculated effort to sedate or incapacitate the children before their deaths, though investigators have not publicly detailed the precise sequence of events. The presence of two distinct substances across all four victims indicates both women participated in preparing the lethal doses.
Rabbitt has previously indicated that Steadman, the grandmother, was the primary suspect in orchestrating the killings. Early in the investigation, police described Steadman as the likely perpetrator who poisoned and stabbed her daughter and grandchildren before taking her own life, though the toxicology results now clarify that both women died by the same antihistamine overdose rather than by other means.
The case has drawn intense scrutiny to the small Saratoga County city of Mechanicville, a community of roughly 5,000 residents where such violence is virtually unheard of. The single-family home where the six bodies were discovered became the focus of a multi-agency investigation involving local police, state authorities, and forensic specialists.
Details about what preceded the killings remain limited. Investigators have not released information about a motive, though the presence of a confession letter has been reported. The contents of any such document have not been made public, and police have declined to characterize what might have driven a mother and grandmother to systematically eliminate an entire generation of their own family.

Diphenhydramine, sold under brand names including Benadryl, is widely available without prescription and is generally considered safe at recommended doses. At excessive levels, however, it can cause fatal cardiac arrhythmia, seizures, and respiratory failure. Its accessibility has made it an occasional instrument in intentional poisonings, though such cases typically involve individuals rather than multiple victims.
