NYPD officers pulled a woman from the Brooklyn Bridge cables Friday after she climbed past the pedestrian walkway and dangled her feet over the East River.
The rescue unfolded shortly before noon, drawing crowds of pedestrians who watched from below as the unidentified woman perched on a metal utility box attached to the bridge’s steel beams. Helicopters from the NYPD Aviation Unit hovered overhead while members of the Emergency Service Unit, wearing harnesses and tethered to thick cables, scaled the structure to reach her.
Mariana Madrigal, 30, was sightseeing nearby when she spotted the woman and began recording. “There was a girl that was trying to kill herself,” Madrigal said. “I didn’t hear her, but she was acting like it.”
The bridge rescue caused traffic chaos below. Drivers stuck in halted traffic for more than an hour attempted to exit their vehicles to watch the operation, but officers ordered them back inside. The standoff ended when ESU members secured the woman and brought her down from the beams.
Police transported her by ambulance to Bellevue Hospital for a psychological evaluation. Authorities have not released her name.
The Brooklyn Bridge, completed in 1883, has long been a magnet for both tourists and those in crisis, with its distinctive Gothic arches and web of suspension cables offering numerous access points beyond the designated pedestrian promenade. Friday’s incident marked the latest in a series of high-angle rescues that have tested the NYPD’s specialized units.
The Emergency Service Unit, which handles the department’s most technical rescues, trains regularly for operations at height and in confined spaces. Members rappelled from aviation helicopters or climbed hand-over-hand along the bridge’s century-old steel to reach the woman Friday.
Madrigal’s video, shared widely online, showed the woman seated with her legs hanging over open water as officers closed in. The footage captured the precariousness of her position and the deliberate pace of the rescue operation.
Bridge traffic remained frozen throughout the ordeal, with the span connecting Manhattan and Brooklyn serving as both dramatic backdrop and logistical complication for the responding officers.
