Daniel Zhengyu Qin, 35, a San Jose-based Apple software engineer and father of three, has been identified as the sole fatality in a boat crash beneath the Golden Gate Bridge last Wednesday.
Qin succumbed to injuries at a Marin County hospital following the early-morning collision near Lime Point around 6:10 a.m. On September 17. Two other boaters survived the incident but remain hospitalized as authorities continue investigating the cause of the crash.
Captain Ben Mechling, a licensed USCG Master Mariner who was out on a salmon fishing trip, witnessed the vessel’s final moments and recorded the incident. “When the boat was cutting across my bow, I noticed it was going into a place where normally you wouldn’t go. … It was going about 25 knots. I paid attention to it, and it smacked right into the rocks,” Mechling told The California Post.
Mechling immediately alerted the US Coast Guard, triggering a massive multi-agency rescue operation. Responders found three individuals aboard the capsized vessel, all suffering severe injuries. Qin was rushed to the Marin County hospital where he later died. The two surviving boaters also received emergency treatment there.
Family friend Cathy Wu has come forward to share details about the man behind the headline. “Zhengyu was a beloved software engineer at Apple, a devoted husband, and a loving father to three young children — an 11-year-old son and two younger daughters, 9 and 3 years old,” Wu said in a statement.
Wu has launched a fundraising campaign on behalf of Qin’s wife, Yao Deng, who she says is “facing an unimaginable loss, both emotionally and financially.” The fundraiser aims to cover funeral expenses, living costs, and emergency funds for the surviving family.
The campaign description paints a fuller picture of Qin’s character. “Zhengyu was kind, funny, and endlessly generous. He got along effortlessly with his coworkers, his children looked up to him, and his friends adored him,” the fundraiser read.
Wu added that Qin was “always the first to show up when anyone needed help — whether it was passing along his kids’ outgrown things to other families, sharing the fish he caught on his fishing trips, or simply lending a hand whenever a friend was in need.”
The crash occurred in the waters beneath one of America’s most recognizable landmarks, where strong currents and rocky outcrops have long posed hazards to boaters. Lime Point, located on the Marin County side of the Golden Gate strait, sits directly beneath the bridge’s northern approach and features submerged rocks that become particularly dangerous at speed.
The vessel was traveling at roughly 25 knots — approximately 29 miles per hour — when Mechling observed it heading toward the rocky shoreline in an area he noted was not a typical route for boats. The force of the impact caused the vessel to capsize, leaving the three occupants in the water until rescue teams arrived.
Authorities have not yet released the identities of the two surviving boaters or disclosed what factors may have contributed to the vessel’s course toward the rocks. The investigation remains active as officials work to determine whether mechanical failure, operator error, or environmental conditions played a role.
