Three California poachers were arrested at a national park after officers found them covered in blood with headless deer hidden in trash bags.
The California Department of Fish and Wildlife (CDFW) announced the arrests on Friday following a nighttime operation at Angeles National Park in Los Angeles County. Officers had received tips about illegal deer hunting in the area and launched targeted patrols in response.
“After receiving a tip from a vigilant member of the public, officers conducted targeted night patrols in the area. During one of the patrols, officers observed two vehicles off-roading and shining a spotlight into the forest; an illegal and highly dangerous method of hunting,” the agency announced.
The poachers’ capture came just as rifle hunting season expanded across California. Almost two dozen deer hunt zones opened statewide on September 19, a period when legal hunters contribute millions to conservation efforts. “Deer tag sales in 2025 generated nearly $7 million in revenue, which provided crucial funding for big game conservation, habitat protection and restoration, and scientific research,” CDFW wrote last week.
During the patrol, officers spotted two vehicles driving off-road and using spotlights to illuminate the forest, a technique known as jacklighting that is both illegal and hazardous. They stopped both vehicles and detained three individuals. “Officers stopped both vehicles and detained three individuals. During initial contact, officers noticed blood on the suspects’ clothing and hands, prompting a comprehensive investigation,” the agency added.
The subsequent search uncovered firearms and two female deer in gruesome condition. One animal had been completely skinned, while the other was cut into four pieces. Both deer were decapitated and stuffed inside black trash bags. The suspects then allegedly confessed to illegally killing the deer and attempting to conceal the evidence.
All three individuals were arrested but later released on the condition that they appear in court.
The case highlights ongoing poaching problems in Southern California. About two months prior, CDFW officers arrested lobster poachers at the Santa Monica Pier. That operation recovered 34 lobsters, including several egg-bearing females, which were eventually returned to the ocean.
The agency encourages the public to report suspected wildlife crimes through CAPTIP at 888-334-228. Tips from community members played a direct role in the Angeles National Park arrests, demonstrating how public vigilance aids enforcement efforts.
The three poachers are expected to appear in court following their release.
