Avila Beach packed in its biggest crowd of the year as a sold-out rodeo took over the shoreline.
The annual Beach BreakaWave Rodeo, 24, held its first edition at the central California coastal venue last weekend, drawing thousands of spectators who filled the sand for bronc riding, breakaway roping, and barrel racing. Competitors lined up along the water’s edge to pull skiers across the surf line using high-tensile tow ropes attached to galloping horses.
Edward Colson, an Avila Beach resident, told KSBY he had never seen the town so packed.
“The town was probably as crowded as I’ve ever seen it, and I expect the businesses might have done quite well as well,” Colson said. He added that he was lucky to score tickets because the event sold out within hours.
Local businesses saw massive surges in foot traffic, with restaurants, shops, and boardwalk vendors operating at peak capacity throughout the festival. Sara Elena Loaiza, who runs a downtown bed and breakfast, told the news outlet that tourism is a necessity for the town and that events like the BreakaWave Rodeo give residents a chance to be social in an otherwise quiet region.
“We’re very appreciative of programs that come into Avila, especially right now when it’s non-peak,” Loaiza said.
The rodeo also featured live performances by Jordan Forer and Corb Lund.
Beyond the adrenaline and entertainment, the BreakaWave Rodeo functions as a fundraiser with roots tracing back to the COVID-19 pandemic. Cal Poly Rodeo coach Ben Londo originally envisioned a safe, open-air haven where his student-athletes could continue practicing and competing during lockdowns.
What began as a grassroots student gathering has since evolved into a massive production and an official qualifier for major events like Rodeo San Diego.
The transformation from a small student event to a major qualifier marks a rapid rise for the coastal competition. The debut beach edition this year signals the rodeo’s growing reach beyond its original campus origins.
