Trump is baffled over why death row inmate Christa Pike couldn’t be executed

President Trump voiced astonishment that Tennessee’s execution of Christa Pike went wrong, saying the lethal injection should have been straightforward to carry out.

Trump, 78, addressed the botched procedure while speaking to reporters who traveled with him to Texas, making clear he would leave any further decisions to state officials. Pike, 50, became the first person in recorded history to survive two rounds of lethal injection, and she remains alive in critical condition.

“How does that happen?,” Trump said. “Should be easy to do. It shouldn’t be very difficult.”

He described the episode as an “interesting situation” but drew a sharp boundary around his own role. “That was an interesting situation, but you’re going to have to speak to Tennessee about it. Whether or not they’re going to go forward,” he continued.

Pike had been scheduled to become the first woman executed by Tennessee in two centuries. She was convicted of torture and murder for the 1995 killing of a classmate, committed when both were teenagers, in which she bludgeoned the victim and used a box cutter on her body.

The execution team encountered severe difficulties with the procedure. Her attorneys said Thursday that Pike was stabbed with at least seven needles during the botched attempt.

Randy Spivey, one of her lawyers, called what happened “cruel and torturous” and pressed Gov. Bill Lee to commute her sentence to life in prison.

Pike herself had anticipated problems with the lethal injection method. She had requested to be executed by hanging instead, arguing that blown veins in her arm would make it difficult for the executioner to access them for the pentobarbital.

Lee, a Republican, responded to the failed execution by suspending all executions in Tennessee pending review. He publicly characterized what happened to Pike as a “tragedy.”

The case now sits in limbo, with the governor’s moratorium in place and the president declining to offer any federal pressure or guidance on whether Tennessee should make another attempt.

The original crime dates to 1995, when Pike and the victim were both teenagers. Prosecutors secured a conviction for torture and murder based on evidence that Pike brutally beat her classmate and then used a box cutter on the body, a case that has kept her on death row for nearly three decades.

Trump’s remarks mark a rare instance of the president commenting on a specific state-level execution, though he stopped well short of endorsing either a second attempt or clemency.
