Two Killed and Dozens Hospitalized in Georgia Homecoming Party Mass Shooting

Two people are dead and at least 35 others wounded after gunfire erupted at a massive homecoming block party in rural Georgia.

The shooting broke out around 1:25 a.m. Sunday near Pine Street in Vienna, Ga., where more than 1,000 people had gathered for the celebration, Dooly County Sheriff Craig Peavy said. Officers were already on site monitoring the crowd when shots rang out from at least two locations roughly a block apart.

The two fatalities were men ages 20 and 23, Dooly County Coroner Brett Walls confirmed. Their families and the Georgia Bureau of Investigation have been notified, though authorities have not yet publicly identified either victim.

The GBI announced it has taken over the investigation alongside local law enforcement. “Deputies immediately responded to the area and discovered multiple people had been shot,” the bureau said in a press release. “Deputies also found two people in the 600 block of Pine Street that were pronounced deceased on scene. Victims were taken to several regional hospitals for treatment.”

The wounded were dispersed across multiple regional hospitals for treatment, though officials have not specified how many remain in critical condition. The sheer volume of casualties overwhelmed the small community of Vienna, located about 55 miles south of Macon in central Georgia.

By Sunday evening, neither the identity of the shooter nor any motive had been established. Sheriff Peavy indicated that the gunfire originated from at least two separate positions, raising the possibility of multiple shooters or a coordinated attack.

The homecoming event had drawn an enormous crowd to the small town, with estimates placing attendance above 1,000 people. Such gatherings are traditional in many Georgia communities, marking the return of former residents to celebrate local school pride and reconnect with hometown roots.

The GBI’s involvement signals the seriousness of the incident and the limited resources of the rural county’s own investigative capacity. State-level assistance is common in Georgia for major violent crimes, particularly those involving multiple victims and complex crime scenes.

Authorities have asked anyone with information about the shooting to come forward as the investigation continues.
