American Idol Alum Caleb Flynn Sobs and Makes Self-Serving Claims at Sentencing for Executing Wife Before Judge Drops the Hammer

Caleb Flynn sobbed through his own sentencing while still insisting he did not murder his wife.

The former “American Idol” contestant and Ohio church music pastor, found guilty of executing Ashley Flynn, 37, in her bed, received life in prison without parole from the judge who heard his tearful denials. Flynn, whose two young daughters were asleep in their rooms during the 2023 killing, had been convicted on all counts after prosecutors proved he shot his wife to begin a new life with his mistress Alleigha Botner, 24.

“I did not kill my wife,” Flynn said in court, his hands shaking as he clutched papers he read from. “I will continue to fight for my innocence as long as the Lord allows me to, as I did not kill my wife.”

The judge was unmoved by the display. Prosecutor Paul Watkins told the court that Flynn had immediately fabricated an intruder story after the killing, attempting what Watkins called a transformation “from Ashley’s killer into another supposed victim.” The prosecution’s theory, which the jury accepted, held that Flynn murdered his wife while their daughters slept nearby, then constructed an elaborate cover story rather than confess.

Flynn’s courtroom tears flowed most heavily when he addressed his children directly, acknowledging the future he would now miss. “You both are my greatest joy in this life,” he said. “Please know your daddy is so proud of you and loves you beyond what words can describe … I have so many thoughts and dreams of raising you to grow up to be mighty women of God but unfortunately I can’t.”

He extended similar emotional appeals to his parents and brother, weeping as he spoke to them from the defense table in his orange jail clothes.

Yet even his expressions of regret were laced with self-exoneration. “I made vows to Ashley on our wedding day,” Flynn said through tears. “I failed those vows and through my decisions I have caused you guys an incredible amount of pain. Through those decisions I’m sure you have felt betrayal, confusion, anger and so much more.”

The most pointed contradiction in Flynn’s statement came when he pivoted from praising his dead wife to denying her murder. “What I am most ashamed of and regret most of all are the awful things I said about Ashley,” he told the judge. “I loved her and love her. She was my wife. She was beautiful and amazing in countless ways.”

Five victims were scheduled to deliver impact statements before sentencing, beginning with Ashley’s sister, Kayla Keyt. Keyt described the ongoing trauma for her nieces, sharing a scene from just days earlier when “one of Ashley’s daughters was laying beside me sobbing into my shoulder, as they both often do, because she missed her mommy and could not understand how her own father could have done this to all of us.”

Keyt then relayed the child’s devastating question: “Then she looked at me and asked ‘Why should I even believe in Jesus if he allowed this happen to us.'”

The case traced back to prosecutors’ allegations that Flynn, then serving as a music pastor at an Ohio church, carried out the execution-style killing of his wife in her own bed. The murder came as part of a calculated plan to escape his marriage and begin a relationship with Botner, his 24-year-old mistress. Flynn’s subsequent claims of an unknown intruder, which he maintained even at sentencing, were rejected by investigators and jurors who saw through what Watkins described as a transparent attempt to recast himself as a victim.

Flynn’s combination of tears and continued denials drew no apparent sympathy from the court, which imposed the maximum available sentence.
