Obama’s ‘Saddam Hussein’s Cheesecake Factory’ Jab at Trump Comes Back to Bite Him With ‘Guy Built Himself a Wizard Prison’

Barack Obama, 63, roasted Donald Trump’s White House renovations during a Saturday campaign stop in Ohio, but the dig drew immediate fire over his own controversial presidential center in Chicago.

The former president accused Trump of prioritizing interior design over governing during remarks aimed at boosting Democrats ahead of upcoming elections. “I mean, I don’t know if you’ve noticed, but he seems very focused on home renovations,” Obama told the crowd. “He should be on HGTV.”

Then came the punchline that lit up social media: “He’s got the White House looking like Saddam Hussein opened a Cheesecake Factory.”

Conservative strategist Matt Whitlock fired back on X, where the exchange quickly went viral. “The guy who designed this wizard prison for himself has thoughts on aesthetics?”

Another commenter on the platform piled on with a similar architectural jab: “The guy who built this intergalactic porta potty is criticizing the way Trump decorates the White House.”

The mockery centered on the Obama Presidential Center, the massive Chicago complex that officially opened June 19 after years of delays and ballooning costs. The rock-like structure has earned unflattering nicknames including the “Death Star” and the “Obamalisk” for its hulking, fortress-like appearance.

The Obama Foundation estimated the project’s final price tag at $850 million, hundreds of millions above initial projections. Some subcontractors have also alleged they are owed millions for their work, though the foundation’s construction manager handles those contract disputes.

Trump’s own White House makeover plans have drawn parallel scrutiny. The administration announced a proposed ballroom in July 2025, plus a revamped Rose Garden and a helipad on the South Lawn. The White House initially pegged the ballroom at $200 million, but a contractor’s estimate put the broader project’s cost at $600 million, with a substantial portion expected from taxpayers despite Trump’s earlier claim that private donors would cover it.

The ballroom would accommodate up to 650 seated guests, more than triple the East Room’s 200-person capacity, providing what the administration calls a permanent venue for major White House events.

Some online defenders of the Cheesecake Factory chain also bristled at Obama’s comparison. “Does Obama not understand that to most Americans the Cheesecake Factory is a very nice and fancy restaurant?” one X user asked.

“Classic Obama snobbery,” another wrote on the platform. “Cheesecake Factory is a great option for people who can’t afford a private chef at their Martha’s Vineyard estate.”

The back-and-forth highlighted how both presidents’ legacy-building projects have become political lightning rods, with supporters of each man eager to attack the other’s spending and taste.

Obama’s Saturday campaign swing through Ohio came as Democrats work to mobilize voters in a state that has trended Republican in recent cycles. The former president has remained one of his party’s most requested surrogates, though his appearances sometimes generate as much attention for his sharp-elbowed humor as for the candidates he promotes.

Trump’s renovation push has included multiple high-profile changes to the executive mansion and its grounds since he returned to office, with the proposed ballroom representing the most expensive and ambitious element.

The Obama Presidential Center’s opening last month marked the culmination of a years-long effort to build a permanent South Side Chicago home for the 44th president’s papers and programs, though construction disputes and cost overruns shadowed the milestone.
