Sophia Bush has detailed the painful phone call that exposed her ex-husband’s infidelities.
The “Chicago P.D.” star, 44, learned that Chad Michael Murray, 45, had been unfaithful with multiple women during their brief marriage when she rang one of his closest friends while Murray was away on a film set. That conversation forms part of Bush’s newly released memoir, “And I Will Tell You Mine,” which hit shelves Tuesday.
Bush’s suspicion had been triggered months earlier by a no-show at their wedding. One of Murray’s best friends had claimed sudden illness the night before the April 2005 ceremony in Santa Monica, California, and failed to appear as a groomsman. “It had always bothered me that one of [Murray’s] best friends had fallen mysteriously ill the night before the [wedding] day and not shown up to stand up there as a groomsman,” she wrote in the book. “Thinking about it that summer gave me the chills. I needed to know why.”
That lingering unease led Bush to contact the friend directly. When she finally called, the unnamed man sighed and asked her a pointed question before revealing everything. “‘And then he told me. Everything he could about all the girls he knew of. Girls I knew and plenty of girls I didn’t,'” she wrote in her memoir. The scope of the betrayal stunned her at the time, though she has since chosen to keep the specific details private. “The number and the details are not important now. But at the time, they were shocking,” Bush added in the book.
Bush and Murray had begun their relationship in 2003 while filming the first season of “One Tree Hill,” the teen drama that made both actors household names. Their on-set romance translated into real life, and by April 2005 they were married in California. The union crumbled quickly. Within five months, the couple had separated as whispers of cheating circulated publicly. Bush sought to end the marriage through annulment, filing in February 2006 and citing fraud as grounds, but a judge denied that petition. The divorce was finalized in December 2006.
Despite the acrimonious split, both performers continued their professional obligations on “One Tree Hill” for several more years. Murray remained with the series until his departure in 2009, meaning the former spouses shared screen time long after their personal relationship had dissolved.
The memoir revelation adds new texture to a split that has fascinated fans for nearly two decades. Bush has since rebuilt her personal life, marrying former soccer star Ashlyn Harris in a secret ceremony during the summer of 2025. Murray has also moved on, wedding actress Sarah Roemer in September 2014; the pair now have three children together.
Bush’s decision to name the source of her discovery — a friend of Murray’s who finally confirmed what she had feared — offers a rare firsthand account of how the truth emerged. The actor himself has not publicly addressed the claims in her memoir.
