Police Helicopter Footage Captures Moment Escaped Inmate Is Found Hiding

A Michigan inmate who slipped out of a propped-open jail door was back in custody within hours after a police helicopter spotted him hiding in swampy woods using infrared cameras.

Casie Jo Helsel, 44, escaped Crawford County Jail at 1:30 p.m. Monday, prompting state police to dispatch an aircraft over the surrounding wooded terrain. Officers located him at 3:58 p.m., roughly two and a half hours after his escape, and returned him to the facility without incident.

Helsel’s criminal history spans more than 25 years, according to Michigan Department of Corrections records. He has served three previous prison sentences and two parole sentences, with past charges including assault and battery.

This was not his first escape. During Monday’s search, a crew member’s voice could be heard over the helicopter radio explaining Helsel’s typical pattern of evasion. “His MO is to hunker down, whether it be in the water, under a dock or at a stream on the edge and just wait ’till night,” the officer noted.

The released footage shows the helicopter circling above dense trees before zooming in on a heat signature crouched amid bushes and debris. The tactical team’s coordination became clear as the aerial observer directed ground units toward the hiding spot. “You guys are almost standing on top of it. What we’re seeing, heat-wise. We got him. We got him,” the crew member continued.

State police later praised the collaborative effort to secure Helsel. “Great work by all who worked together to safely take the suspect into custody,” they shared.

Authorities do not currently believe the individual who left the door propped open intended to assist Helsel’s escape. Following the incident, the sheriff announced his office will conduct a detailed review of policies and procedures to prevent similar scenarios.

Helsel reportedly fled through the unsecured door at the Crawford County facility, exploiting what appeared to be an operational lapse rather than a coordinated breach.

The same week saw another escape elsewhere in the country. In Tennessee, Jacob Allen Morley, 28, remains missing after breaking out of Northwest Correctional Complex in Tiptonville on Sunday night. Authorities say Morley, who received a life sentence after a 2025 killing of his co-worker and was not eligible for release until December 2083, scaled the prison perimeter and traveled two miles to a farm where he stole a vehicle. A reward of up to $2,500 is being offered for information leading to his arrest.

The Crawford County sheriff’s planned policy review is expected to examine jail security protocols, including door monitoring procedures.
