Husband, 65, and Wife, 37, Reveal How They Make Their Marriage Work Despite 28-Year Age Gap

Bernie, 65, and Giselle, 37, have spoken out about how they navigate their 28-year age gap.

The married couple, who met on a dating app and now share their lives on social media, said that their connection developed through shared values and mutual thoughtfulness rather than despite their age difference. Giselle admitted she initially forgot Bernie’s exact age, once texting a friend that he was 55 before checking his profile and discovering he was actually 65.

Both were seeking committed relationships, and small gestures early on signaled their seriousness. Bernie researched vegetarian restaurants for their first date because of how Giselle ate at the time. For their second date, he showed up at her house with tools to repair her fence, having noticed it needed work during his previous visit. Giselle, in turn, organized a birthday celebration for him with balloons, cupcakes and an ice cream cake that deeply touched him.

The pair took a vacation to Florida shortly after they began dating, where they discovered how much they enjoyed each other’s company. Around that same period, Giselle unexpectedly lost one of her jobs, and Bernie supported her through the experience.

“Looking back, the age difference was never something we had to consciously overlook,” Giselle said. “Our connection developed naturally through shared values, thoughtfulness, and the way we treated one another.”

Their families were initially accepting, though some relatives raised concerns as the relationship grew more serious. The couple declined to discuss those situations in detail out of respect for those involved.

Technology presents one of their more predictable generational divides, with Giselle frequently helping Bernie navigate his phone and various apps. They also clash over belongings: Bernie saves items that might prove useful again, while Giselle prefers decluttering. Their sleep schedules differ as well—she is a night owl, he a morning person—meaning one can be ready for bed while the other is just settling into the evening.

Communication styles have required compromise too. When upset, Giselle wants time and space to process her feelings, while Bernie prefers to talk through problems and resolve them immediately. They have learned to respect these different approaches rather than demanding identical responses from each other.

Their experiences of parenthood overlap more than outsiders might assume. Bernie has an adult son in his early 30s, while Giselle has a son in his early 20s, and they often find themselves having similar conversations with their children about money, responsibility and navigating adulthood.

“We’re both independent individuals with our own opinions, experiences, and strengths, and we approach our marriage as equal partners,” Giselle explained.

This egalitarian approach extends to their home design. When they disagreed about the kitchen sink—Bernie wanted it in the island, Giselle preferred a single basin—they compromised on a single-basin sink in the island, giving each partial victory. They deliberately chose a single-story property over a two-story house for long-term practicality and accessibility, and they have considered bathroom layout and other features to keep the home functional as they age.

“We’re building a home that we hope will accommodate our needs not just today, but for many years to come,” Giselle said.

The couple have faced online criticism, including assumptions that Bernie is attracted to Giselle because of her youth or that she is with him for financial gain. They say these judgments ignore the shared morals, mutual respect and genuine enjoyment of each other’s company that they believe ground their marriage. When they began posting online, they simply wanted to share their lives, humor and experiences as a married couple. Their age difference quickly became a frequent comment topic, but they now focus on the positive community they have built, including friendships with other age-gap couples.

“We know what our relationship looks like when the cameras are off, and that’s what matters most to us,” Giselle said.

The most difficult reality they have confronted is the possibility that their age difference means they may not have as many years together as they would like.

“We understand that with our 28-year age difference, there’s a possibility we won’t have as many years together as we’d like,” Giselle said. “It’s a reality we’ve acknowledged and discussed.”

Rather than letting this shadow their marriage, they concentrate on building their life together while planning responsibly for what lies ahead.

“We could spend our relationship worrying about what might happen years from now, or we could appreciate the life we’re fortunate enough to share today,” Giselle said. “We’ve chosen to plan responsibly for our future while continuing to enjoy the present.”

They added: “We would rather experience a beautiful love story, however long it lasts, than miss out on that love because we were afraid of how it might end.”

Their advice to other couples in similar relationships is to ensure they feel respected, valued and supported, without allowing fear of judgment to dictate their decisions. Ultimately, they hope their story demonstrates that a marriage does not need to fit societal expectations to be meaningful.

“We’re simply two people who found happiness together,” Giselle said.

The couple continue growing their social media platforms together, describing the work as an exciting opportunity to build something creatively and professionally.
