Janet Jackson’s Designer Reveals Shocking Truth Behind Infamous Super Bowl Wardrobe Malfunction

Wayne Scot Lukas has broken two decades of silence to claim Janet Jackson’s 2004 Super Bowl “wardrobe malfunction” was deliberately planned.

Lukas, the pop icon’s longtime fashion designer, said Sports on Tuesday that the stunt was engineered so Timberlake, 45, could one-up a viral moment from the previous year. “Britney [Spears], Madonna and Christina Aguilera kissed in front of Justin on MTV. So, Janet’s choreographer Gill said, ‘We have to do something bigger.’ That’s how this became that,” he said.

The designer alleged the true failure that February night in Houston lay with MTV’s control room. “They kind of left Janet out hanging,” Lukas said. “So the people I’d blame are the MTV producers.” He claimed they missed their cue to cut to black after Timberlake tore away part of Jackson’s top.

According to Lukas, the aftermath onstage diverged sharply from the plan. After Jackson “just stood there with her bouncing breasts,” the “Together Again” singer was meant to descend beneath the stage where he waited with covering garments. “She was supposed to come back down under the stage to meet me to wrap her up in clothes, and she never came back down,” he explained.

The original concept was even more revealing, Lukas disclosed. Jackson was initially slated to wear a G-string and expose her buttocks, but the plan shifted two days before kickoff, sending him into a frantic redesign.

The professional fallout hit Lukas directly. “He never made up with any of us,” the stylist said of Timberlake. “We all lost a lot of work. I had moral clauses in my contract. I was losing jobs. I had to stay quiet for my friend Janet — and I did.”

Timberlake has not responded to Lukas’s allegations, according to the designer’s account. Lukas also said he has not been invited to participate in Timberlake’s upcoming Apple TV docuseries about the incident, despite his central role in creating the garment at the heart of the controversy.

“I’m the only one who really knows what happened, because I designed the outfit, made the outfit, and changed the outfit two days before the actual production,” Lukas stated. “I know all the stories and all the secrets, and I know where the bodies are buried.”

While Lukas said he does not require a personal apology from Timberlake, he issued a direct challenge regarding the documentary. “I don’t need an apology,” he said, adding that he wants Timberlake to “tell the truth” in the series.

Lukas had previously said that Timberlake himself pushed for the reveal. “Justin insisted on doing something bigger than their performance. He wanted a reveal,” he said.

The day after the broadcast, Jackson, 58, issued a public apology stating the “costume reveal” decision came “after final rehearsals.” She emphasized that MTV, CBS and the NFL had “no knowledge of this whatsoever” and conceded that “unfortunately, the whole thing went wrong in the end.”

The Federal Communications Commission launched an investigation after receiving over half a million complaints. Jackson was pressured to withdraw from presenting at the 2004 Grammy Awards, and her music videos and singles were subsequently blacklisted by MTV and CBS chief Les Moonves.

In her 2022 two-part Lifetime documentary, Jackson offered a different characterization of the event. “It was an accident that should not have happened, but everyone is looking for someone to blame and that’s gotta stop,” she said. She also confirmed that she and Timberlake had forgiven each other and remained friends, calling the incident “blown way out of proportion.”
