Mastectomies save lives, but the scars they leave behind are a permanent reminder of what breast cancer survivors have gone through.
For most of those who have undergone this procedure to remove a part or even an entire breast, the only post-op options are breast reconstruction, or living with the scars and missing nipples for the rest of their lives. But there is a third, less well known, option.
A growing number of mastectomy tattoo artists are helping breast cancer survivors reclaim their bodies by turning their scars into beautiful works of art. These tattoos can be as simple as a single flower or a complex design that covers the entire scar. Whatever the design, these tattoos are a way for breast cancer survivors to show the world that they are survivors, and that they are not ashamed of their scars.
In addition to being beautiful, these tattoos can also be very empowering. They remind breast cancer survivors that they have faced down a powerful enemy and won. They also help to build self-confidence and improve body image.
“How do you help a woman who has fought death? What can you possibly contribute?” tattoo artist David Allen asked.
Tattoos, of course.
With the help of P.Ink — short for “Personal Ink” — breast cancer survivors can connect with tattoo artists who have experience inking on mastectomy scars.
Currently, their roster features dozens of artists living in major cities across the US and Canada, including notable artists like David Allen and Shane Wallin.
“I’ll never forget it. What was clinical became beautiful again… we turned sterile into sensual. We took back control,” Allen said of his first experience tattooing mastectomy scars.
While the aesthetic results are undeniably beautiful, the psychological benefits are even more astounding.
Diane, a breast cancer survivor, said her tattoo provided her with “something missing” that she had been seeking for years.
“The mirror is my friend again,” said Willie Mae in another testimonial.
“Breast cancer doesn’t have to leave the last mark,” according to P.Ink.
We couldn’t agree more.
If you are a breast cancer survivor who is interested in getting a mastectomy tattoo, be sure to do your research first. Not all tattoo artists are created equal, and not all of them have the experience or training necessary to create beautiful and tasteful mastectomy tattoos. Ask around for recommendations. and once you have found a talented artist, be sure to discuss your ideas and preferences with them so that they can create a design that is perfect for you.
