Seattle-Based Photographer Captures Dark And Dreamlike Worlds With Her Camera

Seattle-based shutterbug Kindra Nikole‘s haunting photo series entitled Dreamscapes looks like it was touched by none other than mother earth herself. Rife with dreamlike imagery, her photos feature models at one with nature, wearing the most intricate dresses made of lavender flowers and petticoats of fern.

What’s even more amazing is that Nikole crafts the wardrobe herself, which she admits is often a challenge. “Some shoots require months of planning, crafting, and prep work,” she says.

The photographer says working with fresh foliage can be a bit of a pain — literally. Since it wilts within mere hours when taken out of water, she has to work like mad to assemble garments, often burning herself with hot glue in the process.

Nikole initially tried out photography as a high school sophomore, but soon gave it up after being discouraged by a professional photographer that she had met.

But Nikole was destined to see the world through a lens, and has been snapping away since picking up a used camera three years ago.

A self-confessed fan of dark fantasy and anything ethereal, Nikole is inspired by the work of fellow photographer Kirsty Mitchell. Not just because of her art, but also due to the fact that Mitchell’s work was influenced by the death of her mother… something that Nikole can relate to.

Having lost her own mother two short years ago, Nikole turned to photography to grapple with her sense of loss.

A typical day of shooting involves an early rise, “with questionable amounts of coffee and tea”. Nikole also makes sure to stock on protein bars, as she tends to forget to feed herself during a shoot.

“Since I have very fleshed-out ideas for the concepts of Dreamscapes, it’s usually not a very long round of shooting before I have what I want,” she says.

“I typically know exactly how I want the model posed, [their] expression, and the mood, so it’s simply a matter of getting things into place and then snapping some quick shots.”

When asked whether she will continue working on Dreamscapes, Nikole gives an answer we’re all looking for.

“There’s no end in sight — I intend to just create images for the series until I feel satisfied,” she says.
