Endangered Pygmy Hippo Baby Makes A Splashing Debut At Melbourne Zoo

This is Obi. He’s a 3-week-old pygmy hippo.

Born to mom Petre and dad Felix, he just recently learned how to swim, making quite the literal splash at Melbourne Zoo.

Just look at him go!

Little legs paddling furiously…

Squeeeeeeeee!

Of course, short breaks are in order.

“He’s only little so about 10 to 15 minutes in and he’s a bit tired and he has to take a break. And then he’s back into it right away,” said Justin Valentine, the zoo’s wild sea manager.

Thankfully, his doting mom is always around to make sure he’s okay.

Obi was born as part of an international breeding program and is the first pygmy hippo to be born in the zoo in 33 years.

His birth is particularly exciting because pygmy hippos are endangered and their exact numbers are unknown.

He is named “Obi” after the Nigerian word for “heart” — quite apt because he’s definitely captured ours!

Just keep swimming, little guy.
