These adventurous individuals you see suspended hundreds of feet above the ground in the Italian Dolomites are athletes who are commemorating peace.
The 26 men and women came together to sing, laugh, and lounge in 17 colorful hammocks strung up high in the sky.
In this same spot, a hundred years ago, fierce fighting broke out as WWI began. Some 18,000 soldiers lost their lives.
“Just a hundred years ago, winters up here were characterized by bombs, grenades, and lots of pain,” the event co-founders Alessandro d’Emilia and Armin Holzer told My Modern Met.
“Our idea was to re-experience Monte Piana in friendship and peace with each other, accompanied by kindhearted feelings during the day, and lulled to sleep at night by magical silence.”
