These wide-eyed and unbearably adorable Japanese and Siberian flying squirrels look like they’ve come straight out of a Disney cartoon, but they’re actually found in Japan and some parts of Europe.
Old World flying squirrels, as they are known, don’t hibernate, but do like to snooze for several days at a time during the cold winter months.
Flying squirrels don’t actually fly: they glide using a furry membrane called the patagium between their front and rear legs.
Using this bit of nifty gear, they can glide over 100 meters to escape a predator, find a nice bit of leaf to munch on, or just find a change of scenery.
