We have evolved to feel fear. And while it helped our ancestors during dangerous and life-threatening times, today it’s sometimes a nuisance. That primal response to sabre tooth tigers can now, in modern times, stop you from trying out new things or taking steps toward a career change — all because you’re fearful of what may lie around the corner. But it doesn’t have to be that way, because fear can also work to your advantage. Here’s how.
#1. Fear kicks you into gear.
If there’s something you desperately want in life, it could very well be your fear of failure that kicks you into gear. For example, fearing that you won’t lose your baby weight will motivate you to work out.
#2. Fear of stagnancy is the most powerful motivator there is.
Living a stagnant existence is less than awesome. The fear of life standing still and never changing for you can be a powerful motivator to create change in your life.
#3. Fear can motivate you to do the right thing.
When someone puts the fear of god into you, you often pull away from the doing the wrong things. For example, when your parents do something to terrify you in order to teach you a lesson, you’re more inclined to make a good decision. MADD (Mother’s Against Drunk Driving) is a pretty good example of using fear tactics to motivate people to not drink and drive.
#4. Other people’s fear can also be a motivator for you.
When you realize that everyone has fear, you’ll see it as an opportunity for success. There may be a lot of people out there doing what you’re doing but if their fear gets in the way, it’s a clear pathway for you. Where other people won’t dare to cross, you will. When you do, the rewards will be huge.
#5. Fear of the future helps you grow in the present.
If you’re afraid you won’t get married, have a house or get a great job, you’re going to make choices to get those things. You’ll go up to the pretty girl, you’ll work extra hours at your great job. You’ll get promoted and buy the house of your dreams.
#6. Every time you conquer fear, you grow stronger.
This is probably the most motivating factor to overcoming your fear. When you conquer it and the weight lifts off your shoulders, you feel so good that you want to do it all over again. The more you fight your fear, the more you’re motivated to break through. Fighting fear opens your world up and brings you opportunities you can’t even imagine right now.
