A British teenager who had her whole life ahead of her has tragically passed away following an accident while on a family holiday in the Dominican Republic.
Abbie Lainton, 16, from Swindon, was celebrating the summer holidays with her family on the Caribbean island when she died on July 30. Her siblings Carley and Bradley were also badly injured in the same incident.
The details of the accident remain unclear, though some reports have linked the tragedy to a boat incident off the coast of BayahÃbe, a popular tourist destination in the east of the island. The exact circumstances have not been formally confirmed by authorities or the family.
Abbie had completed her GCSEs earlier in the summer and was looking forward to receiving her results. Her death has left her family, friends and the wider Swindon community in deep shock.
A GoFundMe page set up to support the family has quickly gained traction, raising over £8,000 toward its £10,000 target. Becky Jamieson, who organized the fundraiser, shared a heartfelt tribute to the teenager.
“On July 30, Abbie Lainton tragically lost her life in a terrible accident while on holiday in the Dominican Republic,” Jamieson wrote. “Becky and Gary have lost their beautiful 16-year-old daughter, and Carley and Bradley were also badly injured in the accident. Abbie had her whole life ahead of her. She should have been enjoying the summer with her friends and looking forward to receiving her GCSE results.”
Jamieson continued: “She was so loved by her family, friends and everyone who knew her. For Abbie, forever 16, forever loved and never forgotten.”
Abbie’s former school, Tanwood School for Performing Arts, released a statement paying tribute to the keen dancer who had trained there since childhood. A spokesperson said she “joined Tanwood as a dinky dot and was part of an exceptional group of dancers who formed strong friendships which spilled over to the audience when they performed together. She always performed with a huge smile, and those beautiful feet. We are all in complete shock at this heartbreaking news and send so much love and support to her family and friends at this unimaginable time. You will always be in our hearts.”
Abbie was also an active member and coach with Swindon Lightning Cheerleading club, where she competed in competitions across the world. The club held a gathering on August 9 for members to share memories and write messages of support for the family.
The club released their own statement expressing their devastation. “There are simply no words that feel enough,” they said. “Abbie was a much-loved member of our Swindon Lightning family. Her kindness, infectious smile, unwavering encouragement and love for cheerleading touched the lives of so many athletes, coaches and families over the years. She brought so much light to our gym, and her loss has left us all heartbroken. Our thoughts, love and deepest condolences are with Abbie’s family and loved ones during this unimaginable time.”
Abbie was also remembered fondly by The Ridgeway School, where she was a Year 11 student. Headteacher Helen Buttery informed parents of the tragedy in a letter, describing Abbie as “much loved” by both staff and students and a “bright light” within the school’s Year 11 community.
The tragedy has struck just weeks before Abbie would have received her GCSE results, at a time when she should have been celebrating the end of her school exams and looking forward to her future education.
The Foreign Office has been contacted for comment regarding the incident and the circumstances surrounding Abbie’s death in the Dominican Republic.
