Jesse Driscoll says he never thought he’d see an alligator in his bagel shop.
Driscoll, who owns Bagel Dock Express in Southport, North Carolina, was installing a new oven last Thursday when the scaly intruder slipped through an open back door. The 3-foot reptile wandered through the stock room, into the kitchen, and finally behind the front counter where the owner spotted it and jumped in terror.

“It’s just so far out of the ordinary for a bagel shop,” a stunned Driscoll told WWAY News. “You can see lots of things. People coming in. Friends coming in to say hi,” he said. “But, never in a million years did I think I’d see an alligator.”
Surveillance cameras captured the entire intrusion, footage the business later shared showing the petite predator’s path through the shop. Driscoll bolted outside immediately upon seeing the gator and pulled another man back into the store to witness the startling sight.
The owner called 911, and Southport police along with Animal Protective Services arrived to safely remove the animal. The police department posted photos of the tiny critter on social media with a quip: “Alligator- Isle 1.”

Bagel Dock Express leaned into the absurdity on its own social media accounts. “Apparently, word of our fresh bagels has made its way into the swamp!” the shop joked. The store added: “No injuries, no drama … just one very unusual customer! Fresh bagels. Wild experiences.”

The incident drew quick attention online, with the combination of a mundane setting and an unexpected predator generating the kind of viral moment that small businesses rarely encounter. Driscoll’s dramatic leap when spotting the gator became a particular highlight of the shared footage.
Southport sits near the Cape Fear River and the Intracoastal Waterway, putting it in coastal North Carolina territory where alligators are native. Encounters with the reptiles are not unheard of in the region, though they remain rare inside commercial establishments with front counters and cream cheese spreads.

The shop has continued operations following the brief gator disruption, with its social media team clearly ready to capitalize on the unexpected publicity. Driscoll’s new oven installation, the task that had distracted him during the intrusion, presumably finished without further wildlife interference.
