A body has been discovered following the disappearance of a CrossFit athlete who was participating in a swimming event for the CrossFit Games in Texas.

Serbian competitor Lazar Đukić went missing during the 800-meter swim segment at the Fort Worth Marine Creek Lake in Texas, just before reaching the finish line.

The incident took place around 8 am on Thursday morning (August 8), and first responders retrieved a body from the lake approximately two hours later.

While authorities have not yet confirmed the body’s identity, the CrossFit Games’ committee released a statement acknowledging that an athlete had passed away.

“CrossFit is deeply saddened by the death of a CrossFit Games competitor during the swimming portion of Individual Event 1 at the 2024 CrossFit Games,” the statement read.

“We are fully cooperating with authorities and doing everything we can to support the family at this time.”

The Fort Worth Star-Telegram detailed that seven firefighter units initially responded to a potential drowning call at the lake around 8 am.

In light of the tragic news, further events scheduled for the day have been suspended.

Đukić had been a frequent participant at the CrossFit Games for several years, ranking 88th worldwide in the male category and third in Serbia.
