5 Bad Habits That Can Actually Improve Your Life

We all have some bad habits, and sometimes they make us feel a little bit guilty. But according to Psychology Today, these five ‘bad’ habits can actually benefit us both psychologically and physiologically.

#1. Lying in bed in the morning

Feel guilty about getting out of bed late? Don’t!

New research on sleep and health shows that early risers have a somewhat larger risk of heart and circulatory diseases. In a study of more than 3,000 healthy people conducted by Japanese University researchers, it was found that those who got up at 5 in the morning had a 1.7 times greater risk of high blood pressure, and double the risk of various cardiovascular diseases than those who got up 2-3 hours later.

#2. Cursing

Although foul language is not the best way to communicate or express feelings, studies it can have benefits. Keele University researcher Richard Stephen’s performed a study that found swearing helps to reduce perceived pain.

Participants in the study were asked to insert their hands into ice water and keep it there for a while – those who were doing that while swearing kept their hands in water for up to two minutes, and those who did not swear – up to a minute. However, scientists claim that swear words can reduce pain only if they are normally not used very often, so relax!

#3. Playing computer games

Playing computer games often looks like an addiction to those who do not partake. But while extended gaming sessions have been found to be harmful to health, researchers say gaming in moderation can be helpful.

Studies have shown that children with cancer, who play computer games after chemotherapy, demand far fewer painkillers than those who do not play. The same results were made with adults who had burns or severe back pain. Scientists believe this is due to the fact that games are a very efficient way in diverting attention away from the pain.

#4, Daydreaming

According to scientist Kalina Christoff, daydreams activate parts of the brain that are responsible for problems. Her study revealed that daydreaming is an important cognitive state during which the human focus on the specific activity is directed to the subconscious thinking about personal problems.

“When you start to dream during lessons or a call, maybe you can miss something useful, but in fact, your mind uses that time to solve other important questions of your life,” says Christoff.

So, there’s actually nothing wrong about dreaming of those new dresses you found after seeing the Saks Fifth Avenue promo code, because you are actually dealing with lots of other stuff in your mind – you just don’t know it!

#5. Restlessness

A restless person’s shaking leg may cause frustration to others, but it turns out, it may have benefits to themself.

Many types of research done in the obesity clinic “Mayo” by expert James Levine, showed that such people burned around 350 calories per day just from their ‘restless’ movements alone. So if you are always moving around and can’t sit calmly for a while – be proud of yourself and tell your colleagues that you’re working out!
