Devilishly simple, but also devilishly tricky. Got your answer? Let’s break it down…

The first question tells us that the value of each horse is 10, as three horses equals 30. The second equation allows us to deduce that the value of the horseshoe is 4. The third equation tells us the cowboy boot is worth 2.

But there’s only one boot and one horseshoe in the final equation, as beady-eyed puzzlers quickly spotted.

So the final equation looks like it’s 10 + 2 x 4, leading many people to guess the answer as 48. But due to the BODMAS rule we all learned in school, which dictates the order of working our math problems, the horse should be multiplying ONE horseshoe first, then adding ONE cowboy boot. So that’s

So 1 + (10×2) = 21. And there’s your answer. Fun, right?
