Bill Maher has claimed that Gavin Newsom is adopting some of Donald Trump’s tactics, prompting the California governor to push back on the comparison.
Newsom appeared on a new episode of HBO’s Real Time with Bill Maher, which aired last night (May 1). During the conversation, Maher pressed the governor about what he described as Newsom’s recent habit of trolling the president.
“Many people would say that you are imitating him,” said Maher. “You of all people who may or may not be running [for the 2028 presidency], you’re the one who kind of imitates his style the trolling.”
Maher also pointed to Newsom’s defamation lawsuit against Fox, arguing that it resembles Trump’s long-running pattern of threatening or pursuing legal action against various media organizations, including the BBC.

Newsom responded: “Fox better look to settle right now or apologize for defamation.”
“Okay, but that sounds exactly what he does! Suing media?” Maher then said.
Newsom maintained his position, reiterating his claims of defamation and calling on media outlets to avoid publishing falsehoods.
