Billy Ray Cyrus has spoken about a frightening health crisis in 2024, revealing he was diagnosed with sepsis and later came to view his survival as a “miracle”.
The 64-year-old said the illness left his entire body severely swollen. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, at least 1.7 million adults in the US develop sepsis each year, underlining how serious and widespread the condition can be.
Cyrus explained that his recovery was so unexpected it even surprised the medical team treating him, leading him to believe that his prayers had been answered.
In an interview with PEOPLE, the singer said:
“I don’t know exactly how it evolved. It was my worst nightmare.
“Two years before that, my mom had died in that hospital, in the very floor that I was on.”
His mother, Ruth Ann Cyrus, died in 2022 at the age of 85.
Reflecting on coming through the ordeal, Cyrus said:
“That’s a miracle.”

After the diagnosis, Cyrus also experienced vocal paralysis. The condition happens when nerve signals to the larynx, or voice box, are interrupted, stopping the muscles that control one or both vocal cords from moving properly.
Vocal cord paralysis can affect speech, breathing and swallowing, and treatment may involve voice therapy or surgery depending on how severe the damage is and whether function returns on its own.
He admitted he feared he might never perform again, but said words from his daughter Noah helped push him to keep working on his voice.
He said:
“Noah’s got that one song, ‘Don’t Put It All on Me’, that honestly saved my life.”
The track was released in 2025, with Cyrus saying it became a source of strength during the most difficult stretch of his recovery.
Cyrus also shared a moving moment involving his grandson Bear, which he said inspired him during one of the lowest points in his recovery.
The star added:
“In this very broken moment of my life, my little grandson Bear looked at me and said, ‘Try again’.
“And up until that moment, he had never spoken to me at all. I wasn’t even sure if he knew my name. In that moment I thought, ‘He’s telling you something’.”

Cyrus is also now in a relationship with actress Elizabeth Hurley, with the pair having gone public in April 2025, and he said she stayed supportive during the period when he felt like giving up.
The Mayo Clinic describes sepsis as follows:
“Sepsis is a serious condition in which the body responds improperly to an infection,”
It is considered a life-threatening medical emergency because the body’s response to infection can begin damaging its own tissues and organs.
The condition can develop rapidly and its warning signs are sometimes difficult to recognise at first.
Common symptoms can include confusion or other mental changes, quick shallow breathing, unexplained sweating, dizziness, shivering, a high heart rate, shortness of breath, and pain while urinating.
The medical outlet adds:
“Symptoms of sepsis are not specific. They can vary from person to person, and sepsis may appear differently in children than in adults.”
CDC guidance also notes that many cases begin before a patient reaches hospital, often after an infection that is not improving.
If treatment does not begin early, sepsis can lead to septic shock, which is a medical emergency that can be fatal.
According to the Mayo Clinic, septic shock causes a major fall in blood pressure and can seriously harm the lungs, kidneys, liver, and other essential organs.
