A body language expert has dissected Nicki Minaj’s onstage reaction to Donald Trump’s crude compliment at a Michigan rally.
Sean Johns, a body language analyst at BodyLytics, said that Minaj, 41, was “unbothered” by the former president’s remarks during the event held ahead of next month’s midterm elections. Trump, 78, is currently touring swing states in a final push to rally Republican voters before polling day.
The rapper had taken the stage with Trump and led the crowd in chanting his name while praising his impact on the country. Minaj said Trump had “changed the energy of the country,” adding: “He’s given us a future to look forward to.”
Earlier in his speech, Trump had drawn attention to Minaj’s physical appearance with a remark about her “beautiful a–,” then immediately added that he hoped she hadn’t felt “insulted” by it. Johns analyzed the exchange and concluded that Minaj’s response demonstrated deliberate control rather than genuine comfort with the comment.
“He put her on the spot, and she took the spot,” Johns said. “The only honest second in this clip is the one before she stands, because everything after it is a performer at work.”
Johns continued: “Then she stands, and standing is the choice. Someone who feels insulted stays in the seat and lets the applause cover it. She rises, waves to the room rather than to him, and turns around, which takes a line about her body and turns it into her moment.”
The expert emphasized the power dynamic he observed, noting that Trump’s follow-up revealed more about his own uncertainty than about Minaj’s reaction. “He’s the one checking in, not her,” Johns pointed out. “‘I hope Nicki wasn’t insulted’ is a man hearing his own line land and testing the room, and the fist pump is relief that it did. She never has to reassure him, and that tells you who held the upper hand in that exchange.”
Johns further analyzed Minaj’s later appearance on stage alongside Trump, where she pledged ongoing support. “When she joins him on stage later, ‘I will support you forever’ closes the loop on her terms, not his,” he observed.
The body language specialist cautioned against interpreting Minaj’s public smile and wave as evidence she approved of Trump’s remark. “What most people will get wrong is reading the smile and the wave as proof she was fine with it,” Johns warned. “Nobody in a VIP seat in front of thousands has the option of looking hurt, so the social reaction is the only one available.”
He added: “What you can read is the choice she made with it: she went bigger, not smaller. If someone makes you the joke in a room, stand up and take the room.”
Minaj’s appearance at the rally marks a notable shift in her political positioning. While she had previously criticized some Trump administration policies during his first term, she has more recently declared herself the president’s “number one fan.” During her onstage remarks, she framed the upcoming elections as a critical juncture, stating: “We really need all these great people to be elected, because this is a major turning point for our country.”
Trump continues his campaign tour with additional rallies scheduled across Michigan and other battleground states through early November.
