Firefighters eventually removed that victim, but the person later died at a nearby hospital. Dramatic images showed the red car being hauled from the churning ocean by a crane, with powerful waves crashing against the cliffs. The recovery operation unfolded in challenging conditions as responders worked against the tide and darkness.

Santa Cruz Fire sent all five of its units to the scene, along with three units from Central Fire District, a battalion chief from Scotts Valley Fire and Santa Cruz police. The multi-agency response highlighted the severity of the incident and the difficult terrain along the popular coastal roadway.

The identities of the two people involved have not been released pending notification of family members. Authorities have not disclosed what caused the vehicle to leave the road and plunge into the water, and it remains unclear whether speed, weather conditions, or other factors played a role.

West Cliff Drive is a scenic route that runs along the edge of bluffs overlooking Monterey Bay, drawing surfers, tourists, and locals to spots like Steamer Lane, one of California’s most famous surfing breaks. The road is narrow in places with steep drops to the rocks and water below.

In the viral moment, images of the red car being lifted from the ocean by crane circulated online, showing the vehicle battered by waves against the cliff face. The photographs captured the dramatic aftermath of a crash that turned a picturesque stretch of California coastline into a fatal accident scene.

The surviving victim was transported for treatment of minor injuries. The deceased victim was pulled from the vehicle by firefighters and pronounced dead after being taken to a hospital.
