Dave Bautista is putting his body through a punishing rebuild to become Kratos.
The 56-year-old former WWE heavyweight, who found blockbuster fame as Drax in Marvel’s Guardians of the Galaxy films, revealed on Instagram that he is three weeks into an intensive weight-training regimen for Amazon’s upcoming live-action God Of War series. The actor stepped in as a late replacement after original star Ryan Hurst suffered serious on-set injuries that forced him to exit the production entirely.
Bautista posted a training video with a caption that laid out his timeline in plain terms: “3rd week in to weight training again. 2 more months to get to where I need to be. Like ridin a bike! LFG!”
The “LFG” shorthand — short for “let’s f–king go” — signals the intensity Bautista is bringing to the physical overhaul. By his own estimate, he is roughly one-third of the way toward achieving the imposing, muscle-bound frame that defines Kratos across Sony’s hit video game franchise.
Packing on mass is familiar territory for the six-time world champion wrestler turned actor. He previously bulked up dramatically to play Leonard in M. Night Shyamalan’s 2023 thriller Knock at the Cabin, then shed that added muscle once cameras stopped rolling. Now he appears to be reversing course again, following a similar path to the one Hurst had reportedly been on before his injury-triggered departure.
The recasting has pushed back production timelines. Earlier reports had pointed to a mid-October resumption for the Prime Video series. Bautista’s two-month estimate, however, suggests filming will more likely restart in late October or early November.
When cameras do roll, Bautista will headline an ensemble that includes Ólafur Darri Ólafsson as Thor, Teresa Palmer as the warrior Sif, and Callum Vinson as Atreus, Kratos’s son. Additional cast members remain under wraps.
The series draws from Sony’s 2018 God Of War reboot and its 2022 sequel, God Of War Ragnarök, both of which reimagined the once-Greek demigod in the realm of Norse mythology and centered on his complicated relationship with his son.
Prime Video has faced parallel production headaches with another major game adaptation. The streamer’s live-action Tomb Raider series, starring Sophie Turner, was forced to pause earlier this year after Turner sustained her own on-set injury — leaving two of the platform’s highest-profile video game properties sidelined by unexpected setbacks at the same time.
Bautista’s casting marks his latest move into darker, more physically demanding territory after years of mixing action blockbusters with dramatic turns. The Kratos role demands not just brute size but a brooding, barely contained rage that the character’s voice actor, Christopher Judge, defined across the games.
The Prime Video adaptation remains without a confirmed premiere date.
