Donny Nozell, Dolly Parton’s longtime manager, has filed for a temporary restraining order against the late singer’s nephew Bryan Seaver following his dismissal as head of security.
Nozell, 64, who guided Parton’s career for more than two decades, claims in new court documents that Seaver has been attempting to extort money and has issued violent threats tied to her estate. The filing, submitted in Nashville, Tennessee, seeks to bar Seaver from coming within 1,000 feet of Parton’s offices and from interfering with her business operations.
According to the documents, Nozell alleges that Seaver began threatening him several weeks before Parton’s death in August. The manager contends that Seaver invoked what he called his “self-proclaimed military-contractor experience, access to weapons, and capacity for violence” as leverage in demands for money.
Seaver allegedly sent messages including one that warned, “All I do is warfare … everyone needs to be worried about what I might do.”
Another alleged message from Seaver read, “Her money better be bigger than I can make elsewhere or I’m going to f–k everyone. I am about to become the hand of retribution for my entire family.”
Seaver, who publicly announced Parton’s death from cancer at age 80, pushed back against the characterization of these messages in a statement.
“Nothing in this lawsuit were threats and most of the comments I stand by,” he shared.
Seaver offered context for the communications, explaining that they were private exchanges during a period of shared grief. “I was talking frankly in a private way with Danny who I thought was my friend and he fancies himself a gangster,” he continued. “A lot of these messages are two guys having rage talk and crying on the phone together while we were grieving.”
The nephew’s firing came without warning, according to Seaver’s own account. On Monday, he described the termination as “unexpected” and “unexplained,” and he and his team issued a broader statement pushing back against Nozell’s actions.
“We refuse to be intimidated by those whose actions we believe are being taken in bad faith and with the intent to profit from the life of someone who willingly gave so much,” he and his team said.
The statement also emphasized Seaver’s commitment to Parton’s wishes. While acknowledging the worldwide support for her legacy, they added, “We remain unshakably resolved to fulfill her final directive to protect her family.”
Seaver’s dismissal was formalized in a termination letter that informed him and his security companies they were immediately removed from all of Parton’s properties. The notice did not, however, eliminate Seaver’s personal stake in Parton’s trust, which encompasses her business interests and properties.
Parton died following a secret battle with cancer, leaving behind an empire valued at approximately $450 million. The question of how that fortune will be divided, and who will ultimately control the various pieces of her business, remains unresolved and could stay private for an extended period.
The dispute between Nozell and Seaver represents an early public fracture in the handling of Parton’s legacy, with both men positioning themselves as protectors of her interests while trading accusations of bad faith.
Seaver’s role in announcing her death had initially cast him as a prominent family spokesman, but his rapid removal from his security post and the subsequent legal filings have shifted that perception.
The restraining order request marks an escalation from the estate side, treating Seaver’s communications as credible threats rather than merely heated private exchanges. Whether a judge grants the order will likely hinge on assessments of Seaver’s intent and capacity for the violence he referenced.
The country music icon’s fortune and the control of her brand remain central stakes in the unfolding conflict, with both sides claiming to act in service of her legacy.
