Sean Penn’s mother and fellow actress, Eileen Ryan, passed away Sunday at her home. She was 94.
On October 16, Ryan would have turned 95 years old. Her exact cause of death was not disclosed.
Throughout her two-decade career, Ryan made over 60 film and TV appearances, including memorable roles in genre films like 2002’s “Eight Legged Freaks” and 2005’s “Feast.” She has had appearances in the critically praised films “Magnolia” (1999) and “I Am Sam” (2001).
Her television roles span from 1960’s “The Twilight Zone” to more recent shows like “E.R.,” “Ally McBeal,” and “NYPD Blue.”
According to the statement, Ryan, whose given name is Eileen Annucci, met her late husband at a New York City rehearsal for “The Iceman Cometh” in 1957.
According to the announcement, the couple moved in together a week after their first meeting and tied the knot a few months later. Their 41-year marriage ended with Leo Penn’s passing in 1998.
The pair also raised Sean Penn’s brother Chris Penn, who acted in films including “Reservoir Dogs” and “True Romance,” and Michael Penn, whose late ’80s single “No Myth” was a Top 40 smash.
When Chris Penn passed away in January 2006, he was 40 years old.
