Elon Musk, the world’s richest man, has smelled a new chance to capitalize on odd items, introducing a perfume called “Burnt Hair” that he claims sold 10,000 bottles in only a few hours, earning him a million dollars.
With a name like mine, getting into the fragrance business was inevitable – why did I even fight it for so long!?” Musk asked on Twitter, where he now describes himself as a perfume salesman.
“The essence of repugnant desire” is the website description of his latest offering, which costs $100 a bottle and is set to start shipping in the first quarter of 2023, making good on a product Musk first touted in September.
Previous ideas include Tesla’s own-brand tequila, which will be released in 2020, and a pair of “short shorts” to represent Musk’s win over investors who bet against the electric vehicle maker, which is now the world’s most valuable auto company.
In early 2018, his Boring Company, a tunneling corporation last valued at $5.7 billion, sold flamethrowers for $500 each, raising $10 million. He also sold 50,000 hats for the Boring Company.
Musk’s objectives have varied from colonizing Mars to establishing a new sustainable energy economy, and he has established Tesla, SpaceX, and other companies in the process.
Last week, the billionaire recommended proceeding with his original $44 billion proposal to take Twitter Inc (TWTR.N) private, requesting an end to a lawsuit filed by the social media giant that might have obliged him to pay up whether he wanted to or not.
If the transaction goes through, Musk will be in command of one of the most prominent media platforms, stopping months of litigation that has harmed Twitter’s image and fueled Musk’s reputation for unpredictable conduct.
The Boring Company did not answer to a question about how long the scent will be available.
