Euphoria fans have been debating the controversial scenes in season 3, but that hasn’t stopped people from noticing Barbie Ferreira’s absence from the show amid her exit. But now she’s spoken out about the reason.
Ferreira played Katherine “Kat” Hernandez, a key presence across the first two seasons of the HBO drama. After production wrapped in 2022, the actor confirmed she was moving on from the role.
For anyone needing a quick reminder, Kat was part of Maddy’s inner circle (alongside Alexa Demie’s character) and often brought a more grounded energy compared with the chaos surrounding Maddy, Cassie, Rue, and the rest of the group.
Her storyline saw her explore cam work and, briefly, dominatrix content before she began questioning what she wanted. Over time, Kat wrestled with her sense of self and her relationship with Ethan, eventually deciding that sex work wasn’t the path for her.

With intense pressure around body image and “body positivity,” Kat’s experience as a plus-sized teen was portrayed as complicated, with her confidence and insecurity often clashing.
Kat does not appear in the third season—widely believed to be the show’s final run—and Ferreira has now suggested it came down to where the character was headed.
Speaking on the podcast Not Skinny But Not Fat, she told host Amanda Hirsch that she ‘didn’t need to be on the biggest TV show on Earth’ if she wasn’t ‘acting’ in a meaningful way.
Ferreira said she felt Kat’s arc had stalled, leaving little room for her to do the kind of work she wanted on the series.
Ferreira said: “I would rather do an indie movie where I’m acting, I’m flexing my muscles, I’m being creatively asked to do things rather than sitting around to be a background character.”

Her comments also addressed speculation that her departure was tied to an alleged dispute with producer Sam Levinson. Ferreira indicated that wasn’t the case.
Ferreira claimed her exit ‘wasn’t dramatic’, stating: “In fact, it was kind of the opposite of dramatic, where it was like a long process of being like: ‘I don’t know if this is it, for me.’”
Elsewhere, much of the current conversation around the season has focused on Sydney Sweeney’s Cassie. The character is now portrayed as creating content on OnlyFans, but that isn’t the only reason viewers have been arguing online.
The bigger flashpoint for some fans has been scenes involving Cassie participating in ‘puppy play’ and also roleplaying as a baby.
For her part, Ferreira’s remarks appear aimed at clearing up misconceptions, explaining that her decision came from a gradual realization about her creative fit rather than any sudden behind-the-scenes fallout.
HBO has been contacted for comment.
