But have you ever stopped to consider the toll it takes on your body, aside from the debilitating hangovers?

It’s crucial to remember that alcohol is essentially a poison, regardless of the enjoyable effects it might produce. But the concerns go beyond immediate repercussions like hangovers. A scientist from the Canadian Institute for Substance View Research has shed light on just how drastically alcohol can reduce your lifespan.

In an interview with The Daily Mail, Dr. Tim Stockwell explained that even a single daily alcoholic drink—whether it’s a glass of wine, a beer, or a shot—can shorten your life by a surprising amount. He noted that one drink a day could reduce your lifespan by approximately two-and-a-half months. However, for those who indulge in heavier drinking, consuming around 35 drinks per week, the impact is much more severe, potentially cutting two years off your lifespan.

While Dr. Stockwell previously supported moderate alcohol consumption, his perspective has shifted based on recent studies conducted over the last five years, including his own research. He now believes that no amount of alcohol is beneficial to your health.

Dr. Stockwell expressed, “Alcohol is our favorite recreational drug. We use it for pleasure and relaxation, and the last thing we want to hear is that it causes any harm. It’s comforting to think that drinking is good for our health, but unfortunately, it’s based on poor science.” He highlighted that any level of alcohol consumption could heighten the risk of various health issues, such as cancer, heart disease, high blood pressure, stroke, liver disease, and more, as echoed by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

Despite the growing awareness and some individuals choosing to abstain from alcohol, overall consumption rates suggest otherwise. Statistics from the National Institute on Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism (NIAAA) reveal that in 2021, the average American aged 21 or older consumed 2.83 gallons of pure alcohol—equivalent to about 603 standard drinks, as defined by the NIAAA, containing 0.6 ounces of alcohol per drink.

Given this information, it might be wise to reconsider the role of alcohol in your life, especially if you’re accustomed to unwinding with a drink. The data and expert opinions certainly make a compelling case for moderation, or perhaps even abstaining altogether.
