With the arrival of colder weather, many people find themselves bundling up in bed, including wearing socks.
The topic of sleeping with socks has been widely discussed. Some individuals can’t imagine going to bed without cozy socks during the winter months, while others find it uncomfortable.
If you enjoy the feeling of warm feet under the covers, this article is for you.
If your laundry pile is overflowing and sock supplies are low, it might cross your mind to wear the same pair during the day and at night. However, experts strongly advise against this practice.
Research conducted by Mattress Next Day examined the bacteria present on worn socks, revealing the presence of Pseudomonas aeruginosa, a bacterium commonly associated with cockroaches. Not exactly appealing.
According to House Beautiful, a survey of 1,000 individuals found that 18 percent wear socks to bed, but only 30 percent of those people switch to a fresh pair at night.
The topic was also featured on the Calm Down With Erin and Charissa podcast, where hosts expressed their disgust over the findings.
The podcast hosts described the revelation as ‘disgusting’ and questioned the practice of wearing socks to bed.
This sparked a debate, with some supporting the habit of sock-wearing in bed, while others disagreed.
One person commented: “I’m shocked this many people are clueless to life in winter in a cold climate. Who DOESN’T wear socks to bed in winter in northern latitudes?”
Conversely, another individual wrote: “Wearing socks to bed seems like the most uncomfortable thing imaginable.”
Another echoed the sentiment: “Who the hell wears socks to bed???”

Experts caution against wearing dirty socks to bed, but clean socks are generally considered acceptable.
“Wearing socks around the house and then getting into bed is generally not a health concern,” states Anna Chacon, MD, a Miami-based board-certified dermatologist, in House Beautiful.
“It can provide comfort and warmth. However, if your socks are dirty or sweaty, it’s a good practice to change into clean ones before getting into bed to maintain good hygiene.”
Nevertheless, Carlie Gasia, a certified wellness coach at Sleep Advisor, warns that even if your socks haven’t touched the ground, wearing them in shoes all day can still cause them to gather dirt and bacteria, especially if you sweat.
Not pleasant.
