Michael Dyer’s family released a heartbreaking statement as his widow begins her emotional journey following his death during a graveyard shift at Sands of Kahana on August 5, and while his killer is in police custody, “Joy’s emotional journey is just beginning as she starts to process this devasting event.”
Michael Dyer, 63, was found unresponsive at the resort on Lower Honoapi’ilani Road shortly after 5:30 a.m. on August 5, and medical personnel pronounced him dead at the scene.
Storer was allegedly seen on security footage attacking Dyer in his office at the Sands of Kahana around 1:45 a.m. Wednesday.
Legend Storer, 20, was arrested and charged with second-degree murder, first-degree burglary and indecent exposure, according to online court records.
Storer is a 20-year-old swimmer from Lahaina who competed for Concordia University Irvine during the 2024-25 academic year, with the university’s athletics website listing him as a freshman specializing in breaststroke and sprint events.
Storer graduated from Maui Preparatory Academy in 2024 and was a two-time Maui Interscholastic League winner, according to his athletic biography.
Prior to that, he was a Maui Interscholastic League champion swimmer at Maui Preparatory Academy and a Hawaii LSC State Championships runner-up in the 100 yard breaststroke.
Legend Storer pleaded not guilty in court, accused of fatally beating a West Maui security guard, and a judge withheld bail, citing public safety concerns.
Storer is being held without bail and is scheduled to appear in court Wednesday.
Investigators said surveillance footage showed an unclothed man arriving at the property around 1:45 a.m., approaching Dyer’s office and assaulting him before fleeing on foot.
Court documents allege Storer entered the building unlawfully and was armed with a 5-gallon water bottle during the incident.
About two hours later, officers responded to reports of a naked man in the nearby Kahana area, and the man had sustained numerous abrasions and was taken to Maui Memorial Medical Center for evaluation.
Police later determined that the man found in Kahana was the same person seen in the resort’s surveillance footage.
Those who worked with Dyer described him with warmth.
“He was a great person and he was just in his office having a cheeseburger on his lunch break. And he had a wife that’s a waitress at Leilani’s,” coworker Bell Hill said.
“It’s horrible.”
Michael and Joy Dyer were married for 26 years.
The victim was a long-time resort employee whose family established a GoFundMe campaign to support his wife of 26 years, Joy Dyer, and friends confirmed that the couple had no children and described Dyer as the love of his life.
The family posted directly to the GoFundMe explaining their needs.
“We are trying to raise $20,000 to cover funeral costs for Mike. We are also trying to help Joy with therapy sessions and basic living expenses like rent and groceries.”
“It is already a difficult time for our family, and for those of you who know Joy, you understand that it is difficult for her to ask for help but we cannot do this alone.”
In the viral moment that shocked Maui, surveillance footage captured a naked man entering the Sands of Kahana complex early on August 5.
The unclothed man approached Dyer’s office and assaulted him before fleeing on foot.
Officers responded to reports of a naked man in the nearby Kahana area about two hours later and apprehended the man around 3:30 a.m.
He was “still unclothed and had sustained numerous abrasions” when officers found him, police said.
Authorities have not disclosed a possible motive.
Storer remains in custody without bail and is scheduled to appear in court.
